Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Requirements

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Requirement

CSUSB IT Governance Executive Committee approved the adoption of Multi-Factor Authentication for all employees and students in 2020. We aim to have multi-factor authentication protection for every campus constituent. CSUSB is currently using Duo Security to provide MFA

Accounts at high risk, such as those successfully phished, will be upgraded to the most secure configuration available. Any existing MFA exemptions or insecure configurations (like phone-call or SMS verification) will be removed.

About Duo

Duo is a two-step authentication solution to help protect your account against the risks associated with leaked or stolen passwords (e.g. phishing) by requiring possession of a trusted physical device (something you have) in addition to a password (something you know). The physical device is typically a mobile phone, tablet, or hardware token.

Please feel free to watch this short introductory video on Duo Security:

Get Started with Duo

The following video shows the few simple steps to get started on enrolling into Duo on your own. You may also follow the simple steps in this knowledgebase article.

Duo Options

Push notification via the Duo Mobile app is our simplest and most convenient option for a strong second factor. The Duo Mobile app is free and available for iOS and Android.

However, if you don't have an iOS or Android device, you may request alternative MFA options including hardware tokens There are no initial fees, but there is a $20 replacement fee per lost, stolen, or damaged device (similar to losing a campus key). The replacement fee is subject to change. You will be required to sign a 'Cryptographic Device Agreement' form.

We look forward to working with you in securing your account. Please feel free to contact the Technology Support Center at (909) 537-7677 or support@csusb.edu if you have any questions.
