Completing or Leaving CSUSB

Planning Your Next Step

Whether you are finishing your program, transferring to another school, taking time away, or leaving CSUSB before completing your studies, planning ahead can help you understand what to do next.

Start with the situation that best matches your plans below. If you are not sure which option applies to you, schedule an appointment with International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) before making changes to your enrollment or travel plans.

Current F-1 Guidance

This page reflects the F-1 requirements currently in effect. Federal immigration requirements may change, and this information will be updated as needed.

If you are unsure how the current requirements apply to your plans, contact ISSS before making changes to your enrollment, travel, or departure plans.

Finishing Your Program and Heading Home

Congratulations on reaching the end of your program! If you are completing your studies and plan to leave the United States, let ISSS know about your departure plans by submitting the 09 Final Departure From the US request in the Coyote International Portal.

Under the current F-1 framework, students who complete their program generally have up to 60 days after completing their studies to prepare to leave the United States, transfer to another school, or take another action permitted under F-1 regulations. Do not remain in the United States beyond the time allowed for your situation.

If you are considering Optional Practical Training (OPT), review the OPT information before submitting a final departure request.

Transferring to Another U.S. School

If you plan to continue your studies at another U.S. school, ISSS must coordinate the transfer of your SEVIS record.

Submit the 09 F-1: Transfer Out request in the Coyote International Portal before leaving CSUSB. ISSS will review your request and help you understand the next steps for transferring your F-1 record.

Taking a Leave or Temporary Break

If you are thinking about taking time away from CSUSB, please speak with ISSS before you stop enrolling in classes or make plans to leave the United States.

A leave of absence can affect your F-1 record differently depending on your circumstances and whether you will remain in or leave the United States. An ISSS adviser can help you understand the immigration steps that may apply to your plans.

You will also need to follow the appropriate CSUSB leave-of-absence process for your academic program.

Leaving CSUSB Before You Finish

Plans can change. If you are considering withdrawing from CSUSB or leaving before completing your program, contact ISSS before you make changes to your enrollment or departure plans.

Leaving your program early can affect your F-1 record, future travel, and eligibility for some F-1 benefits. ISSS can review your situation and help you understand the steps you need to take before leaving.

If you decide to leave CSUSB, submit the 09 Final Departure From the US request in the Coyote International Portal.

Returning to CSUSB After a Leave

If you plan to return to CSUSB after taking time away, contact ISSS well before making travel arrangements or planning your return.

Depending on your F-1 record and how long you have been away, you may need updated immigration documents, current financial documentation, a new I-901 SEVIS fee, or other steps before returning.

An ISSS adviser can review your record and let you know what you need for your return.

Thinking About OPT?

If you are completing your program and are considering Optional Practical Training (OPT), review the OPT information before submitting a final departure request.

OPT has separate eligibility, application, travel, employment, and reporting requirements. Use the OPT page to learn what you need to do before and after completing your program.

Not Sure Which Situation Applies?

You do not need to figure everything out on your own.

If you are unsure whether you should complete your program and depart, transfer to another school, take a leave, or withdraw from CSUSB, schedule an appointment with an ISSS adviser before making changes to your enrollment or travel plans.

We can help you understand which process applies to your situation and where to go next.
