Graduate Application Requirements

Admission requirements and deadlines vary by program, but most applicants will need to meet the following:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (or equivalent academic preparation as determined by the university).
  • Be in good academic standing at your last college or university.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (A Grade=4.0 GPA) in your most recent degree or in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted.
  • Meet additional standards for graduate study, which may include qualifying exams or other program-specific requirements.

In certain cases, the university may consider exceptions.

International Graduate Students

As a student from outside the U.S., you can earn a master’s degree or a second bachelor’s degree at CSUSB. You’ll need to supply English-language proficiency documents, an international application (through Cal State Apply), official transcripts, and other information to successfully complete the application process.

How long does it take to evaluate an application?

Timelines vary by program, but most applicants can expect to receive an eligibility update within about two weeks. For the most accurate information, stay in touch with the graduate coordinator of the program you applied to—they can provide updates on your application’s review status.

How do I apply to a graduate program at CSUSB? 

All graduate applications are submitted online through Cal State Apply. Complete the application, upload your unofficial transcripts and required documents in the “Program Materials” section, pay the application fee, and submit.

Some programs may also require a separate application or additional materials. Be sure to check the admission process for your chosen master’s or doctoral program and review the most recent university catalog for full requirements.

I’ve requested letters of recommendation. Do I have to wait to receive them before submitting my application?

No, you don’t have to wait—you can submit your application while your recommenders are still responding. If you need to update or resend a request for a recommendation, you can do so even after your application has been submitted.
