Employment and Work Authorization

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) helps CSUSB international students understand employment and work-authorization options connected to their F-1 or J-1 status.

Employment rules vary depending on your immigration status, the type of work, and when the employment will occur. Use the resources on this page to find the guidance that applies to your situation.

Before You Begin Working

Do not begin employment, an internship, training, or another work activity until you understand whether authorization is required and, when applicable, that the required authorization is in place.

If you are unsure whether an opportunity is permitted, contact ISSS before you begin.

Other Employment Options

Some employment options are less common and may depend on your individual immigration status, academic program, and circumstances.

J-1 Academic Training

Academic Training may be available to some J-1 students for employment or training related to their field of study. Because eligibility and timing depend on the individual student’s J-1 program, schedule an advising appointment with ISSS before making employment plans.

Severe Economic Hardship

Employment authorization based on severe economic hardship may be available to some F-1 students in limited circumstances. Schedule an advising appointment with ISSS if you would like to learn more about this option.
