Social Security Numbers for International Students
A Social Security Number (SSN) is a unique number issued by the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA). It is commonly used for employment and tax reporting in the United States.
International students generally become eligible to apply for an SSN when they have authorization to work in the United States. Having F-1 or J-1 status by itself does not automatically make a student eligible for an SSN. SSA determines whether an SSN can be issued.
If you are planning to work, first make sure that your employment is properly authorized under your immigration status.
Before You Apply
The Social Security Administration (SSA) determines eligibility for a Social Security Number and maintains the federal application requirements.
Before applying, review SSA's information for noncitizens to understand when an SSN may be available and what documentation may be required. Your requirements can depend on your immigration status and employment authorization.

Do You Need a Letter from ISSS?
Depending on your immigration status and type of employment, you may need a support letter from International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) as part of your Social Security Number application.
If you need a DSO support letter, log in to the Coyote International Portal and submit:
01 Letter: Address - DMV - SSN
Follow the instructions in the request and provide the information requested for your situation.
Tax Questions and ITINs
A Social Security Number and an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) serve different purposes.
If you have questions about ITINs or U.S. tax filing, use the Tax Filing Information page for tax-related resources and guidance.
Protect Your Social Security Number
Your Social Security Number is sensitive personal information. Keep your Social Security card and number secure, and only provide your SSN when it is necessary and appropriate.
You generally do not need to carry your Social Security card with you after receiving it. Store the card in a safe place and keep the number private.
