Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a limited form of practical-training authorization for eligible F-1 students.
CSUSB limits CPT authorization to academic programs in which off-campus practical training is a mandatory degree requirement for every student in the program. Optional internships, practicums, or other practical-training experiences do not meet CSUSB’s current CPT requirements, even when they are related to the student’s major or offered for academic credit.
ISSS determines whether an academic program and an individual student’s circumstances meet the current CPT requirements. Students should not assume they are eligible for CPT before ISSS completes this review.
When CPT May Be Available
An internship or other practical-training experience does not qualify for CPT simply because it:
- Is related to your major;
- Carries academic credit;
- Is connected to an internship or independent-study course; or
- Is one of several options available for completing your degree.
At CSUSB, the practical training and associated course must be mandatory degree requirements for every student in the academic program. ISSS reviews the academic program and each student's individual circumstances before determining whether CPT may be available.
Ask ISSS Whether Your Program May Qualify
If your academic program requires every student to complete an off-campus internship, practicum, residency, or other practical-training experience, ask ISSS whether CPT may be available before making employment or training plans.
In the Coyote International Portal, submit the 00 Immigration Advising Inquiry request and explain that your question is about CPT eligibility for your academic program. ISSS will review your question and provide the appropriate next steps.
Please do not assume that an internship, course, or academic program qualifies for CPT until ISSS has reviewed the circumstances.
Questions About CPT?
CPT eligibility can depend on your academic program and individual circumstances. If you are unsure whether CPT may be available, submit an Immigration Advising Inquiry through the Coyote International Portal so ISSS can review your question and provide guidance.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is employment that is directly related to your major and required or integral to your academic program.
