J-1 Exchange Visitors at CSUSB

CSUSB’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program supports eligible temporary educational and cultural exchange activities, including teaching, research, lecturing, observation, consultation, and academic collaboration.

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) reviews each proposed program to determine whether it fits CSUSB’s institutional sponsorship practices and applicable federal requirements. The appropriate J-1 category depends on factors such as the program purpose, proposed activities, appointment dates, funding, academic background, and site of activity.

Departments interested in hosting an international scholar should contact ISSS before inviting the scholar or making commitments regarding immigration sponsorship or program dates.

Temporary Exchange, Not Tenure-Track Employment

J-1 sponsorship is intended for temporary educational and cultural exchange. The J-1 Professor and Research Scholar categories cannot be used for an individual who is a candidate for a tenure-track position.

Departments considering tenure-track or other long-term employment should contact ISSS to discuss whether another immigration classification may be appropriate.

J-1 at CSUSB

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program may support temporary activities such as:

  • Teaching;
  • Research;
  • Observation;
  • Consultation;
  • Academic collaboration;
  • Lectures or short-term scholarly activity;
  • Professional exchange connected to the visitor’s academic field.

CSUSB most commonly uses the following J-1 scholar categories:

  • Professor
  • Research Scholar
  • Short-Term Scholar

ISSS reviews the proposed activity, appointment length, funding, academic background, and other relevant circumstances to determine the appropriate J-1 category. Departments and prospective exchange visitors should not select or assume a category before ISSS completes its review.
