Nadine Barakat

Marmar Zakher

Jasmine Reza

Outstanding Student in Arabic - Nadine Barakat

Nadine Barakat is an embodiment of what our campus genuinely promises its incoming students to accomplish: Come Here and Go Anywhere. She is a first-generation college graduate in her family who completed not one but two bachelor degrees in four years, far exceeding our campus and the CSU-systemwide 2025 graduation initiative goals.

With much grace and gratitude toward her faculty, supervisors, and peers, Nadine took her educational goals seriously and has already crafted ambitious academic and career plans to pursue as she will soon be entering the labor force. She will be starting her full-time nursing career right after graduation and is considering pursuing a doctorate degree in nursing practice.

Nadine’s respectful, upbeat and positive demeanor and her passion for social justice causes make her an inspiration to all of us.

Emily Sedgwick

Outstanding Student in French - Emily Sedgwick

Emily Sedgwick is a proud alumna of the CSU system, having received her M.A. in Philosophy from Cal State Long Beach and B.A. in Philosophy from San Diego State. Emily joined us as a post-baccalaureate French major in Fall 2016. While juggling part-time teaching positions in philosophy at area community colleges, she has maintained a 4.0 GPA since her arrival. In addition, Emily has very been active in promoting our B.A. and Minor in French and has volunteered her time and teaching expertise to assist our French students on numerous occasions, both in the classroom and as a French tutor in our Multimedia Language Center.

Emily wonderfully embodies the mission and ideals of the California State University and richly deserves this recognition.

Outstanding Student in Spanish - Nicole Roman

Nicole Roman is a very passionate and hard-working student who always accomplishes the goals set for herself. She is very engaged and eager to learn and expand her knowledge and skillset. Given her academic excellence and her outstanding communication skills, she was chosen as a Peer Lab Advisor for Span 415, a difficult Spanish linguistics class. Not only did she master the challenging class content when she took the course herself, but she was also able to explain it to other students, develop her own review materials and create additional practice exercises, as well as to hold successful and well attended Peer Lab sessions. Before that, Nicole had already been serving students as a successful bilingual and bicultural tutor at the Chaffey Community College.

Nicole will surely have a brilliant career as a successful educator and leader in the Hispanic community. She truly deserves the Outstanding Student Award for Spanish.
