About Music Therapy at CSUSB

If you’re passionate about using music to make a difference in people’s lives, CSUSB’s Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy is the perfect fit. Music therapy is an allied health profession where music is used to support therapeutic and palliative care needs.

In this program, you’ll gain a strong foundation in music, human development, and clinical practice while learning how to guide the music therapy process. Your studies will combine classroom learning with hands-on clinical training in local and community-based settings.

When you graduate, you’ll be prepared to take the national certification exam through the Certification Board for Music Therapists and earn the MT-BC credential—your next step toward a meaningful career helping others through music.

Careers in Music Therapy

Music performance

Music therapists use the power of music to help clients meet a wide range of needs. According to the American Music Therapy Association, “music therapists are employed in many different settings, including general and psychiatric hospitals, community mental health agencies, rehabilitation centers, day care facilities, nursing homes, schools and private practice.” They provide services for children and adults with developmental or cognitive disabilities, physical and neurological impairments, speech and hearing challenges, and mental health conditions.

Often working as part of an interdisciplinary care team, music therapists support each client’s goals through carefully designed music interventions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects steady job growth for recreational therapists—which includes music therapists—making this both a meaningful and sustainable career path.
