About Teaching Mathematics at CSUSB

The M.A. in Teaching Mathematics is a two-year program designed for single-subject credentialed teachers who want to strengthen their understanding of mathematics and enhance how they teach it.

Through advanced coursework and collaborative learning, you’ll deepen your content knowledge and expand your instructional skills to better engage and inspire high school students.

Careers in Teaching Mathematics

Math student

The demand for qualified math and science teachers remains strong as the need for a STEM-educated workforce continues to grow.

With an advanced degree in teaching mathematics, you’ll be well prepared for leadership and instructional roles in middle and high schools, helping students build the skills that shape the future of science, technology, and innovation.

Sample Courses

Multivariable Calculus

Applications of differentiation will include linear approximation, directional derivatives, and optimization. Applications of integration will include area, volume, and other physical applications such as centers of mass, work, and flux.

Mathematical Thinking: Communication and Proof

Content will include topics from logic, set theory, divisibility, modular arithmetic, properties of real numbers, properties of relations/functions, and methods of proof.

Euclidean Geometry with Transformations

Euclidean geometry with emphasis on deductive proof and written communication. Definition of congruence and similarity by transformations. History of important theorems with analysis of dependence on Euclid's parallel postulate.

Opportunities for Students

As a graduate student in the M.A. in Teaching Mathematics program, you may be eligible for a paid Teaching Associate (TA) position. TAs gain valuable classroom experience by teaching introductory-level mathematics courses, such as precalculus, and typically lead one or two classes per term based on department needs and faculty recommendations.

The Department of Mathematics also offers fellowships to support qualified students as they advance in their studies and teaching careers.
