About Spanish, M.A. at CSUSB
CSUSB’s Master of Arts in Spanish is a two-year graduate program designed for students who want to strengthen their Spanish language and cultural knowledge for careers in teaching, community engagement, or doctoral study.
This program is ideal if you want to:
- Teach Spanish at the secondary or community college level
- Pursue Ph.D. programs in Spanish or related fields
- Work in roles that support the Latino community or require high-level language proficiency

Careers in Spanish, M.A.
Your master’s degree from CSUSB will enable you to teach at the high school or community college level, or you may decide to apply your skills as a post-secondary foreign language and literature educator, tutor, interpreter or translator, among other positions.
Understanding Spanish—one of the most-spoken languages in the world—also helps prepare you for a career in international business, government and diplomacy, military work, or in the nonprofit sector.

History of the Spanish Language
In-depth analysis of phonological, morphological, and syntactic changes related to relevant events of Spanish and Spanish American history.
Spanish American Literature
Advanced study of the literature of Spanish America from Colonial to Contemporary periods.
Seminar in Spanish American Literature, Culture, Theater and Film
Capstone seminar focusing on representative themes in the field of Spanish American literature, culture, theater or film.
Opportunities for Students
Students can apply for a Teaching Assistantship (TA), and after evaluation by the Spanish faculty, can teach one or more basic college language classes. Student TAs will be paid a regular monthly salary and applications can be submitted immediately upon entering the Spanish M.A. program. Extracurricular activities open to graduate students include actividades culturales, Acto Latino Theater Group, Cal y Canto Poetry Reading, Club Los Amigos, Hispanic Cinema Club, Sigma Delta Pi, and Tertulias.
