The Nonprofit Management minor at Cal State San Bernardino prepares students to understand the unique challenges and strategic opportunities that drive effective leadership in the nonprofit sector.

This interdisciplinary program equips students with the tools to manage mission-driven organizations, engage communities, lead teams, and contribute to positive social impact.

Students learn essential concepts in organizational governance, fundraising and development, volunteer leadership, financial stewardship, and ethical decision-making.

The minor is especially valuable for students interested in careers in community service, nonprofit leadership, advocacy, or public affairs, and it complements majors in public administration, business, social work, sociology, communication, education, and related fields.

Ethical Public Service Leadership

Topics include various theories of leadership as well as leader traits, skills, styles, behaviors, development, evaluation, and ethics.

Nonprofit Management and Leadership

Introduction to the theory and practice of nonprofit management. Students will identify the unique role of nonprofits as public service private organizations; understand the nonprofit legal framework; review concepts in nonprofit leadership and governance, including the roles and responsibilities of the board of directors; learn how to strategically manage staff and volunteers; and understand the unique financial management practices of nonprofit organizations.

Nonprofit Staff and Volunteer Management

This course blends theoretical concepts with practical applications, enabling students to understand the unique characteristics of the nonprofit sector, develop effective recruitment and talent retention strategies, create engaging and meaningful volunteer experiences, and navigate the legal and ethical complexities specific to nonprofit human resource management.
