About National Security Studies at CSUSB

Cybersecurity students

At Cal State San Bernardino, we don’t just study security—we help define the strategies that shape it.

Founded in 1986, CSUSB’s M.A. in National Security Studies is one of the nation’s few graduate programs focused solely on U.S. national security—and the only program of its kind in the California State University system.

Housed in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, this interdisciplinary program blends rigorous academic research with real-world relevance. You’ll gain deep insight into strategic studies, including:

  • Defense policy analysis
  • Intelligence analysis
  • Strategic planning
  • Regional and global security
  • Terrorism and counterterrorism

You’ll also have the flexibility to tailor your education with elective courses aligned to your individual interests—whether that’s emerging technologies, geopolitical dynamics, or specific regions of focus.

Designed for Impact

Whether you're beginning a career or already serving in:

  • Foreign and defense policy
  • Law enforcement or civil service
  • The intelligence community

…you’ll graduate prepared to lead, advise and adapt in complex security environments—or pursue further study at the doctoral level.

At CSUSB, you’ll join a community of scholars, practitioners and changemakers committed to protecting our nation and shaping a more secure world.
