Whether you're just starting college or transferring in, this bachelor’s degree is designed to give you a strong foundation in developmental science, research and real-world practice focused on children (birth to 12), adolescents and families.

As a Child, Adolescent and Family Studies major, you’ll customize your education through one of two concentrations:

  • Early Childhood Development
    Focuses on the development of children from birth to age 8, emphasizing early education, care and family dynamics.
  • Child and Adolescent Development
    Covers the full span of development from middle childhood through early adulthood, preparing you for work with older children, teens and young adults.

Once you’ve graduated with your degree, a range of careers are open to you, including:

  • Social worker
  • Educator/teacher (general, special education; and community college instructor for those who go on to earn a master’s degree)
  • Counselor/therapist
  • Youth organizer/youth support specialist

  • Case manager

Sample Courses

Introduction to Data Analysis in Child Development

Techniques for the elementary analysis of quantitative and qualitative social data. Includes descriptive and inferential measures and tools to code and analyze qualitative data, as well as various ways to present results.

Child Assessment

Students will learn how to administer, score, and interpret a variety of standardized assessment tools commonly used in educational and clinical settings.

Applied Research Methods

Topics may include quasi-experimental design, correlational design, behavioral observation, archival analysis, single-case methodology, survey methodology, research ethics, library research strategies, and writing research reports.

Dulce Mazon, alumna of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Dulce Mazon '19, alumna of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, holds a B.S. in child development and is continuing her education with a M.S. in education and earning her teaching credentials. Dulce was motivated by her professors at the university to excel academically and strive to become an educator herself.
