Minor
About Astronomy (Minor Only) at CSUSB
The Astronomy minor at Cal State San Bernardino gives students the opportunity to explore the universe—its origins, structure, and dynamic processes—through scientific inquiry and observation.
Students study celestial objects such as stars, planets, galaxies, black holes, and nebulae, while gaining foundational knowledge in astrophysics, cosmology, and planetary science. The curriculum combines introductory astronomy with upper-division physics courses, helping students understand both the conceptual and mathematical frameworks that describe the cosmos.
This minor is an excellent addition for students majoring in physics, geology, environmental science, mathematics, computer science, or anyone fascinated by space and the physical laws that govern it.
With access to CSUSB’s astronomy resources, faculty expertise, and observational tools, students develop scientific literacy, critical thinking skills, and an appreciation for humanity’s place in the universe.
Careers in Astronomy (Minor Only)
Studying astronomy cultivates analytical reasoning, quantitative skills, problem-solving, and the ability to interpret complex data—attributes that are valued in a wide range of careers.
While some students pursue astronomy professionally, the minor also supports careers in research, technology, science communication, and education.
Career pathways connected to astronomy include:
- Astrophysics and space science research
- Planetary science and space exploration organizations (NASA, JPL, aerospace research labs)
- Aerospace and defense industries
- Data modeling and quantitative analysis in technical sectors
- Science education and outreach, including K–12 and informal education
- Science communication and digital media, such as public education, museum programs, and content development
- Software and computational roles in astronomy, physics, or engineering contexts
Students interested in becoming professional astronomers or astrophysicists will find that this minor provides excellent preparation for graduate study in astronomy, physics, or related fields.
Sample Courses

Opportunities for Students
Students in the Astronomy minor benefit from a range of hands-on, immersive, and collaborative learning experiences that bring the universe to life:
- Direct observation at the Murillo Family Observatory, CSUSB’s on-campus teaching and research observatory equipped with powerful telescopes for solar, planetary, and deep-sky viewing
- Guided stargazing nights and observational labs, allowing students to apply scientific concepts while exploring real celestial objects
- Coursework in modern astrophysics, covering stellar evolution, galaxies, cosmology, and planetary science
- Access to faculty mentors engaged in astronomy and physics research
- Undergraduate research opportunities, including data analysis, modeling, and observational projects conducted at the observatory
- Participation in STEM clubs and physics/astronomy student organizations
- Public outreach and volunteer opportunities, including hosting community stargazing events at the Murillo Observatory
- Collaborative learning alongside students in physics, environmental science, geology, and computational fields
These experiences allow students to develop scientific skills while engaging with the cosmic world in a uniquely hands-on way, making astronomy at CSUSB both academically rigorous and experiential.
