If you’re passionate about creativity and expression, the Bachelor of Arts in Art program at CSUSB gives you the flexibility to shape your path. 

You can choose from two areas of concentration: Art Education, for students interested in teaching at the K–12 level or exploring careers in art activism, nonprofit leadership, or community arts; or Studio Art, which provides a wide range of artistic experiences and is perfect for those who want to pursue life as a professional artist or continue on to a graduate degree.

Sample Courses

Visual Literacy and Media Technology in Art and Design Education

Using basic browser-based applications to more advanced multimedia production, students will gain experience with creating works of art, interpreting visual culture, and integrating technology into art and design education curriculum.

Art and Human Development

Human development is rooted in dynamic changes in biological, cognitive, and socioemotional processes that interact over time. This course will utilize the perspective of art to explore who we are, how we came to be this way, and where our future will take us.

Visualizing Gender, Performing Identity

This course examines the ways in which gender, ethnicity, race, sexuality, and disability are visual forms of identification, in addition to how identities are performed through stylized repetitions accepted as social norms across diverse cultural communities.

Meet Professor Katherine Gray, MFA

Katherine Gray
A distinguished glass artist, art professor Katherine Gray was selected as a Fellow of the American Craft Council in 2020 and is the resident evaluator on the Netflix show, “Blown Away." She was also the CSUSB 2020-21 Outstanding Professor of the Year Awardee & John M. Pfau Endowed Professor.

Opportunities for Students

As a CSUSB art student, you’ll have access to the Visual Arts Center—home to some of the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art creative facilities in the region. Here, you can explore your craft, experiment with new techniques, and showcase your work in professional settings. Facilities include:

  • Dedicated painting and drawing studios
  • Classrooms for graphic design, web design, UX/UI design, virtual reality, imaging, illustration, and animation
  • Labs and darkrooms for traditional photography, plus a digital photography lab and lighting studio
  • A spacious printmaking studio for both traditional and digital techniques
  • Sculpture studios with welding rooms, a foundry area, and forge
  • Hot, warm, and cold glass-making areas
  • Extensive ceramics studios and an outdoor kiln yard
  • Fully equipped wood and metal shops
  • Digital fabrication machinery
  • An Electronic Interaction Lab
  • The Visual Resource Center for art, art history, craft, and design research
  • Exhibition spaces to display student art and design work
