If you're an avid reader or writer who wants to explore the power of language, the B.A. in English at CSUSB is an inspiring next step. This program helps you develop the ability to read critically, think deeply and write with clarity and purpose.

You’ll study a wide range of writers, literary forms and cultural traditions — gaining insights that sharpen your analytical and communication skills. You’ll also learn to craft well-supported arguments, conduct research, and engage thoughtfully with diverse perspectives.

The major offers five concentrations, so you can tailor your studies to your interests:

  • Self-Directed Study (design your own academic path)

Sample Courses

Introduction to Linguistics

Overview of key concepts and methods of linguistics, as applied to the English language. Explores a variety of linguistic areas, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition.

Introduction to Creative Writing Studies

Introduction to the reading and writing of multiple genres, such as fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry. Emphasis on creative writing process, including reading works by established authors and drafting, reading, discussing, and revising original works by students.

Analysis of Fiction and Nonfiction Prose

A literary analysis of both fiction and nonfiction prose with special emphasis on how to write effectively about these forms of literature.
