About Digital Literacies (Minor Only) at CSUSB

The Digital Literacies minor at Cal State San Bernardino helps students deepen their understanding of digital technologies and how they influence personal, academic, professional, and social contexts.

In an era where computers, smartphones, social media, and the Internet play central roles in daily life, this interdisciplinary minor explores how digital tools shape communication, culture, information practices, and decision-making.

Courses within the minor ask students to consider both opportunities and challenges presented by digital technologies—cultivating critical thinking, digital fluency, and practical skills needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and mediated world.

Digital You/U

An exploration of the multifaceted aspects of digital life and its impact. This course aims to provide students with a strong foundation as they begin their journey in the university.

Movies in the Digital Age

In this course, students will explore and analyze aesthetic experiences related to the impact of digital technologies and cultures on the art of motion pictures, including those of the computer-generated imagery (CGI) revolution and the portrayal of digital culture in movies and TV.

College Learning for Lives and Careers in the Information Age

Examination of impact of technology on quality of life, appreciation of technological progress, understanding of responsibilities and awareness of drawbacks and dangers to interpersonal relationships.

Opportunities for Students

Students pursuing the Digital Literacies GE Minor engage with digital technologies through a flexible curriculum designed to build critical understanding and practical skills:

  • Interdisciplinary coursework that connects digital technology with contexts in society, culture, and professional life
  • Hands-on experiences with digital tools, media production, and computational thinking
  • Courses spanning arts, communication, social sciences, and scientific inquiry, including digital media creation, digital humanities, and movies in the digital age
  • Critical engagement with digital ethics, digital sound and music technologies, and digital media in society
  • At least two upper-division courses and one writing-intensive course to deepen analytical and communicative skills
  • Faculty mentorship that supports students in integrating digital literacies with their major field of study
  • Opportunities to collaborate across disciplines, connecting digital understanding with communication, technology, arts, and science pursuits
