The Bachelor of Science in Biology at Cal State San Bernardino offers a strong foundation across the biological sciences—plus the flexibility to specialize in an area that matches your interests and goals.

Your core courses will explore how biological systems function at every level, from molecules to ecosystems. As you progress, you’ll choose upper-division electives that let you focus on specific topics in biology, such as cell biology, ecology, genetics, microbiology, or physiology.

You’ll learn from expert faculty in small class settings, and gain hands-on experience through labs, research, and fieldwork that prepare you for both graduate study and today’s workforce.

Student Research in Biology

Biology is a versatile degree that opens doors to a wide range of careers in science, research, healthcare, and education.

Sample Courses

Organic Chemistry for Life Sciences

Course topics include organic structure and nomenclature, isomerism, and reactivity with an emphasis on structure and reactions foundational for biochemistry.

Biochemistry I

Structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. Membrane transport, enzyme mechanism and kinetics. Metabolism of biomolecules, including carbohydrate metabolism, fatty acid catabolism, and amino acid catabolism, as well as the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.

Principles of Biology I

Provides a foundational understanding of 1) the process of life and the universality of life processes at the molecular and cellular level and 2) the principles of Mendelian genetics.

Stuart Sumida, Ph.D.
Biology professor Stuart Sumida is considered one of the university’s best for his passion and commitment in teaching and working with students. Due to his extensive experience and research background, he is considered the world’s expert in teaching anatomy to animators and artists, having contributed to more than 70 feature-length films, television programs and video games, including the Academy-Award-winning animated films “Soul,” “Ratatouille” and “Zootopia.”

Early Admission to Medical School

Through a partnership with Western University of Health Sciences, qualified biology majors can earn early admission to the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) program.

  • Reserved for four CSUSB biology students per year
  • Requires a minimum 3.3 GPA and specific coursework
  • Guarantees a spot the year after completing your B.S.
