Mellon Mays Special Keynote Address: "The War at Home: Politics of the Black Left during the Neoliberal Turn" by Broderick Dunlap

Time: 12:00pm - 1:30pm

Location: Online via Zoom

Speaker Bio: Broderick Dunlap is a distinguished scholar from Riverside, California, with an extensive academic background in history and African American studies from La Sierra University, UCLA, and Johns Hopkins University. A committed activist and labor organizer, Dunlap has been at the forefront of significant research initiatives, including “Archiving the Age of Mass Incarceration” with UCLA’s Million Dollar Hoods Project and the California Reparations Task Force. Recognized as a “Changemaker for Justice and Equity” by UCLA College Magazine, his work delves into the history of Black political movements, emphasizing the intersections of race, class, and power struggles. Currently a Ph.D. candidate at Johns Hopkins, his research sheds light on the dynamics of political and economic trends in the history of the United States.

Description: Join us for a compelling keynote address by Broderick Dunlap on the evolution of radical and progressive political movements during the 1980s—a pivotal era marked by the neoliberal shift that emphasized individualism over community and market solutions over collective action. This talk will delve into how these movements provided a voice for the often-ignored concerns of poor and working-class African Americans, challenging the narratives that have long obscured the root causes of racial and economic injustices. "The War at Home" offers a critical reexamination of Black political activism in the 1980s and its lasting significance in today's social movements.

Keynote Speaker, Dr. Lúa López Perez "BLOOMING: My Journey from Spain to the US Preserving Biodiversity"

Time: 12:00pm - 1:20 pm

Location: San Manuel Student Union North Conference Center (SMSU), (In Person and Virtual via zoom)

Speaker Bio: Dr. Lua Lopez was born in a small city in Northern Spain where she spent most of her time in contact with nature. Her intrinsic curiosity and love for the outdoors led her to obtain a bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). During her undergraduate studies, she had the opportunity to spend one year abroad at the University of Azores (Portugal), where she joined a research lab. This experience showed her how to unite her passion for preserving our natural environment and her need to understand how ecosystems work. She obtained her PhD from the University of A Coruña (Spain), focusing on understanding the genetic limitations of endangered plant species to survive changes in their environment. After her PhD, she had the chance to work in research-leading institutions like Heidelberg University (Germany), Pennsylvania State University (US), and Binghamton University (SUNY). These experiences helped her become an expert in bioinformatics, ancient genomics, and science-based pedagogy. This journey around the world led her to CSUSB, where she combines her teaching and research interests while working with some of the most amazing students she has ever met.

Description: Dr. Lúa López is an evolutionary ecologist focused on understanding how surrounding ecological environments have evolutionary consequences on species. During her talk she will walk us through her scientific journey from Spain, passing through several European countries to the US; always focused on preserving our natural environment and species biodiversity that are threatened by environmental changes associated to human activities. Providing research opportunities for students and communicating with potential future scientists has been a major motivation in her professional journey. This seminar will showcase multiple examples on how students have help shaped her research agenda

FREE Lunch will be provided for those who attend in-person (while supplies last)

Laughter is often seen as a way to ease tension in an overly politicized social world. But do the stakes change when the jokes are racist?
