If you're an avid reader or writer who wants to explore the power of language, the B.A. in English at CSUSB is an inspiring next step. This program helps you develop the ability to read critically, think deeply and write with clarity and purpose.
You’ll study a wide range of writers, literary forms and cultural traditions — gaining insights that sharpen your analytical and communication skills. You’ll also learn to craft well-supported arguments, conduct research, and engage thoughtfully with diverse perspectives.
The major offers five concentrations, so you can tailor your studies to your interests:
- Literature
- Linguistics
- Creative Writing
- Rhetoric/Writing Studies
- Self-Directed Study (design your own academic path)

Sample Courses
Writing in the Public Sphere
Consideration of how writers use texts (including visual, digital, and print media) to represent public issues and effect public action. Emphasizes the social and material aspects of public writing and public rhetorics, and includes practice in writing for the public sphere
Chicana/o Literature
Selected literature by and about Mexican Americans. Emphasis on the uniqueness of the voices that collectively define Chicana/o literature and on the formal and thematic characteristics of that literature. Formerly ENG 323.
Child Language and Literacy Development
Examination of how children acquire language and literacy. Attends to linguistic, cognitive, and social factors shaping children's acquisition processes.
