History is the study of past events and historical change as a means to understand our present and inform our future. At California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), the bachelor of arts in history invites students to examine the social, cultural and political conditions that have shaped our world. 

History courses at CSUSB go beyond memorization, challenging students to analyze the world from multiple perspectives, evaluate a wide range of primary and secondary sources, and develop a strong sense of historical context and critical thinking skills. Through this approach, students gain a deeper understanding of global complexity and prepare for careers that value research, analysis and communication.

History Professor

Historians research and analyze the past through writing, teaching and studying. Applying new and dynamic methods of history, CSUSB students learn vital skills that can be applied in the marketplace. A degree in history from CSUSB prepares graduates for a wide range of career opportunities, including roles in education, public service, museums, libraries, archives, research, and writing. 

Here are a few examples of courses that showcase the diversity of the history program at CSUSB:

  • California History – Students explore the cultural and political history of California, examining key topics such as Native cultures, Spanish colonization, the mission system, Mexican rule, the Mexican war, the gold rush, the state constitution, political movements, and immigration.
  • Ancient Egyptian Archaeology – Students will learn about ancient Egypt’s history, society and religion, while also exploring the history of excavation and the removal of objects from Egypt.
  • Teaching History in the Field – A practical course that helps students prepare to teach history and social science classes in schools. The course also introduces methods and tools of historical analysis and explores the mechanics of teaching history and historical writing.

Sample Courses

World History from c.1500

Examines the changing balance of power between regions of the world and the contributions of people from Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas to the development of the modern world.

History of Rome

Roman history from the origin of the Republic to the end of Imperial Rome in the West. Major themes include the exchange of ideas throughout the ancient Mediterranean and the foundations of European culture.

Impact of Warfare in Antiquity

Survey of military history from Bronze Age Greece (ca. 1200 BCE) through fall of Roman Empire in the West (CE 476) focusing on six interconnected themes.

Opportunities for History Students

History students have participated in various long-term and short-term study abroad programs all over the world, including France, Ghana, Japan, London, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, and Spain, to name a few. Also, students have had the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience at the Wadi el-Hudi Expedition, an archaeological site in Egypt’s Eastern Desert. In addition, the history department also publishes “History in the Making,” a journal in which students can get their research published.
