About History, B.A. at CSUSB
History is the study of past events and historical change as a means to understand our present and inform our future. At California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), the bachelor of arts in history invites students to examine the social, cultural and political conditions that have shaped our world.
History courses at CSUSB go beyond memorization, challenging students to analyze the world from multiple perspectives, evaluate a wide range of primary and secondary sources, and develop a strong sense of historical context and critical thinking skills. Through this approach, students gain a deeper understanding of global complexity and prepare for careers that value research, analysis and communication.
Careers in History, B.A.
Historians research and analyze the past through writing, teaching and studying. Applying new and dynamic methods of history, CSUSB students learn vital skills that can be applied in the marketplace. A degree in history from CSUSB prepares graduates for a wide range of career opportunities, including roles in education, public service, museums, libraries, archives, research, and writing.
Sample Courses
California History
Cultural and political history of California from pre-Columbian times to the present. Topics will include Native cultures, Spanish colonization, the mission system, Mexican rule, the Mexican war, the gold rush, the state constitution, Progressive-era political reforms, and immigration. Meets the subject matter requirements for the Liberal Studies degree, in preparation for teaching grades K-8. This course meets the state code requirement in state and local government. Formerly HIST 270.
Ancient Egyptian Archaeology
Examination of ancient Egyptian archaeological contexts that reveal specific themes about their people, history, society, and religion.
Teaching History in the Field
A practicum where students learn high-impact teaching practices with the goal of preparing pre-credential students teachers to teach historical/social science content. Introduces methods and tools of historical analysis and explores the mechanics of teaching history and historical writing. This course provides students with invaluable opportunities to engage with the practices and pedagogy of teaching history. Students must meet competency requirements before they can sign up for the course (2.85 GPA as well as C or better in all required program courses). Students must get the consent of the department chair and must develop a semester-long plan for meetings and coursework. The course fulfills the final requirement for the CSET-waiver. Graded credit/no credit.

Opportunities for History Students
History students have participated in various long-term and short-term study abroad programs all over the world, including France, Ghana, Japan, London, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, and Spain, to name a few. Also, students have had the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience at the Wadi el-Hudi Expedition, an archaeological site in Egypt’s Eastern Desert. In addition, the history department also publishes “History in the Making,” a journal in which students can get their research published.
