Economics isn’t just about money — it’s about people, policy and possibility. At CSUSB, the Bachelor of Arts in Economics gives you a deep understanding of how the economy influences everything from wages and inequality to climate change, banking, and the future of Southern California.

Taught by award-winning faculty known for their internationally recognized research, this program equips you to analyze real-world challenges through a global, regional and local lens.

You’ll explore topics like:

You’ll also have the opportunity to specialize by choosing one of three concentrations:

  • General Economics – a broad overview with flexible career options
  • Mathematical Economics – ideal if you're interested in graduate school or data analysis
  • Applied Economics – focused on real-world skills for business, policy or research careers

Sample Courses

Principles of Macroeconomics

Investigation of the operation of national economies, alone and as part of the global economy. Determinants of the rate of economic growth across countries and through time. Determinants of unemployment, inflation, and national output. Causes of stability and instability in the macroeconomy.

Political Economy of Women

Learn about the challenges women have faced in participating in the economy, past and present. Understand what society can do to reduce gender gaps and motherhood penalties.

Tools of Economic Analysis

Learn statistical modeling techniques in Excel and R, and complete a research project based on a topic of your own interest.

The Department of Economics offers four dedicated scholarships each year:

  • Two scholarships averaging $5,000
  • Two scholarships of approximately $1,500

These awards recognize academic achievement, leadership and a commitment to making a difference through economics.

You can also get involved in the Economics Impact Network, a student-run club that creates space for collaboration, networking and community engagement. Whether you're organizing events, connecting with alumni or leading discussions on current economic issues, you'll build skills and relationships that last far beyond graduation.
