About Aerospace Studies (Minor Only) at CSUSB

The Aerospace Studies minor at Cal State San Bernardino offers students a structured exploration of air and space power, leadership development, national security, and the heritage and values of the United States Air Force and Space Force.

This minor consists of a minimum of 18 units in aerospace studies, with at least 12 upper-division units, providing a blend of foundational and advanced coursework in leadership, communication, and national security studies.

The curriculum is rooted in the Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) framework, but participation in ROTC leadership labs is not required to pursue the minor. Instead, students from any major can engage with this program to strengthen leadership skills, broaden their understanding of global defense and security issues, and gain unique perspectives on organizational dynamics and strategic thinking.

Joanne Whitlock, Assistant Professor, Aerospace Studies

The Aerospace Studies minor helps students build skills and insight that are valuable in a range of career pathways—both inside and outside the military sector.

Through focused study of leadership principles, strategic communication, and organizational dynamics, students gain transferable skills that enhance their career readiness.

Graduates with this minor may pursue opportunities in:

  • Aerospace and defense industries (operations, logistics, analysis, project support)
  • Government and public service roles involving national security, emergency management, or regulatory agencies
  • Aviation organizations focusing on operations, safety, or program support
  • Leadership and management tracks in business, nonprofit, or government sectors
  • Communications, strategic planning, and policy-related work

While the minor itself does not require military service, students who participate in the associated AFROTC program and complete ROTC requirements can commission as officers in the U.S. Air Force or Space Force upon graduation, opening structured military leadership careers.
