Mission

The mission of the Committee for Academic Freedom and Expression is to promote and defend the practice of academic freedom and the scholarly principles of free inquiry and expression, open debate, and healthy disagreement, and advise campus members in conflicts surrounding these values.  It is guided in its work by the AAU&P Statement on the Principles of Academic Freedom and Tenure (1940 and later revisions), the Report of the Committee on Freedom of Expression from the University of Chicago (known widely as the “Chicago Statement”), and other related documents as necessary. 

Duties:

1. To keep informed of current theory and practice of academic freedom, free expression on campus, and other issues related to supporting an intellectually diverse campus.

2. To be alert to cases on campus involving possible infringements of the rights and responsibilities of campus members.

3. To receive requests for its study and advice concerning such cases of possible infringement of the rights and responsibilities of academic freedom and related issues on campus.

4. To periodically review campus free speech policy and other policies within the scope of this committee and advise the Senate on any recommended updates.

5. To sponsor and/or promote campus events designed to model and promote best practices involving academic freedom and responsibility, civil discourse, free expression, and related values in a university setting, consulting with the CSUSB Chief of Police when necessary or appropriate.

6. To keep the Faculty Senate currently informed regarding the Committee's activities and to submit a report to the Faculty Senate at the end of each academic year.

7. When appropriate, coordinate and consult with other similar faculty committees throughout the CSU system.
