My Experience as a Panetta Institute Congressional Intern

Participating in the Panetta Institute Congressional Internship Program was truly the honor of a lifetime. The two-week orientation was an incredible experience—dining with Secretary Panetta and Mrs. Panetta was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Hearing firsthand from someone who has been in the rooms where history was made was invaluable. Secretary Panetta’s accounts of serving in the House during a time of true bipartisanship and his experience in the Situation Room with President Obama during the operation that brought Osama bin Laden to justice were unforgettable. These are stories you can’t buy—experiences that only this program provides.

The orientation also offered us opportunities to hear from local elected officials, governors, presidential candidates, and even a former vice president. Thanks to Secretary Panetta’s connections, the program gives its participants access to influential leaders and insights that few others receive.

Once in Washington, D.C., being part of a diverse cohort of peers from across the California State University system was another rewarding aspect of the program. The Panettas ensured that we were well taken care of with numerous accommodations, but the mentorship and opportunities didn’t stop after orientation. We attended seminars at the State and Treasury Departments, heard from staffers in various fields to explore career possibilities in the federal government.

Beyond the professional growth, the friendships and connections made with fellow interns are ones that will last throughout our careers. Outside of work, exploring D.C. and making memories with my cohort became some of the best moments of my college experience.

This program is truly life-changing and an incredible opportunity, especially for students at CSUSB. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in government and politics—regardless of major—or to those who want to experience living and working in Washington, D.C. Apply today!
