Thursday, September 5, 2024

This exquisite exhibition provides a view of Korean craft tradition from the 16th century to the present day. The over forty objects on view include traditional uniforms, ceramics, furniture, and paintings as well as contemporary ceramics, textiles, lacquerware, and new media artwork. The traditional section of the exhibition gives a glimpse into the furniture, clothing, and decorative objects appreciated and used by Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) scholar-officials.  Work by seven contemporary artists illustrates how that tradition is still expressed in contemporary artistic practice.

The Dung Beetle surprisingly inspired one of the most important symbols in ancient Egypt, the scarab.  Scarabs are the ancient Egyptian symbol of creation, connected with the birth and the rebirth of the sun every morning.  This symbol was ubiquitously used in Ancient Egyptian art and jewelry, both for the living and the dead.  It diametrically occurs in contexts both vitally important to help the deceased pass judgment and enter the afterlife, as well as important to identify administrators conducting their daily tasks of letter writing and overseeing of storage.  Come, learn, and discuss this diverse and dynamic symbol of the sunrise.

Redeeming Demons: Coopting Demonic Forces for Good in Ancient Egypt

April 10, 2021

The word “demon” is used throughout Egyptology for a number of divine or semi-divine creatures encountered in art and texts. Although there is no term for “demon” in Egyptian, scholars have applied this term freely for creatures with an especially menacing demeanor found in the texts that describe the underworld.  But it also appears in reference to other areas of Egyptian magic, medicine, and mortuary art. Demons appear to have malevolent and benevolent tendencies in Ancient Egyptian religion. This conference will look at the benevolent demons. It will especially focus on how the Ancient Egyptians used magic or myth to coerce ostensibly naturally malevolent forces. The study of demons in Ancient Egyptian religion is undergoing a renaissance. This conference will bring together experts in the topic of Demons in Ancient Egypt to offer their perspectives on how the Ancient Egyptians conceived of magical, ritual, and mythical strategies to bend evil to do the will of good.

November 2020

Lecture by Justin M. Jacobs

November 9, 2020

In collaboration with the History Department, RAFFMA will present a lecture by Justin M. Jacobs. From the 1790s until World War I, Western museums filled their shelves with art and antiquities from around the world. These objects are now widely seen as stolen or plundered from their countries of origin and demands for their return continue to grow louder.

Drawing on his new book, The Compensations of Plunder, Justin M. Jacobs, associate professor of history at American University, challenges the longstanding assumption that coercion, corruption, and deceit were chiefly responsible for the exodus of cultural treasures from northwestern China. From a close analysis of previously neglected archival sources in English, French, and Chinese, Jacobs finds that the removal of art and antiquities from China by Western archaeologists was generally undertaken with the full knowledge and consent of Chinese officials and scholars, who in exchange received various forms of capital or compensations deemed more valuable at the time than the objects in question.

Tomb Robbery in Ancient Egypt
by Dr. Kate Liszka

Saturday, August 15, 2020

Participate in the live chat and Q&A

Ancient Egyptians believed that their name, their body, and their memory needed to be preserved to ensure life after death. So that their memory would persevere for the rest of eternity, they were frequently buried in large visible tombs with the often-luxurious objects that they needed in the afterlife. These wealth-filled tombs acted like a beacon of opportunity for criminals. Learn how various tombs were broken into in antiquity, how the Egyptian designed their tombs in an attempt to ward off tomb robbers, and how the tomb robbers were tried and punished for their crimes.

This presentation is a collaboration between the Bowers Museum, American Research Center in Egypt, Orange County (ARCE-OC), and Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA)

Dreams & Memories: Jan Sawka, Coast to Coast:
An online symposium celebrating two exhibitions of work by Jan Sawka

Saturday, May 2nd, 2020

Separated by the whole of the country, two university art museums currently exhibiting the work of the late artist have joined together to present a symposium on his profoundly touching and, ultimately, humane work. Both museums, together with the exhibition curators, have partnered to create an online symposium. Viewers from around the world will be able to join in as symposium speakers consider Jan Sawka's life and achievement – and the connection of his career and art with California and New York – from several points of view, including the biographical, the historical, the technical, and the personal – yielding a composite portrait of this protean and visionary artist.

A special thank you to our partners: Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art (SDMA) in SUNY New Paltz, and Hanna Maria Sawka MFA, in partnership with the Polish Cultural Institute New York, and supported by The Kościuszko Foundation, the SUNY New Paltz Foundation Inc., and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Los Angeles.

Endomorphism Artist Talk with David B. Jang

Wednesday, March 11, 2020

David’s works engage in this reality by maintaining a constant state of motion, transforming and transferring themselves over time (deterioration of materials). The task of his work is to produce line and mass in various states - a process in which the work is never realized in its final form, but just like our body, is only continuously progressing.

One of the most amazing installation art David ever experienced as a little boy was the cloud. There are three types of form that exist which; solid, liquid, and gas. Cloud is gas form and it requires specific conditions, which include the right temperature and gravity. Clouds have been on the earth for millions of years and they will continue to exist. Clouds create rain and rain is absolutely necessary for all the living organisms on the earth. David believes this principle is how installation art should be – bringing benefit to the community and help to develop the cultural throughout history.

California Dreaming: Who’s the Dreamer, What’s the Dream?

Monday, February 3, 2020

The co-curators of the Golden West?: Jan Sawka’s California Dream exhibition, Hanna Maria Sawka and Frank Boyer, will talk about major events in the life and career of Jan Sawka and discuss the thematic threads woven together to create the fabric of Jan Sawka’s California Dream. The co-curators will illuminate how conditions in the Poland of Jan Sawka’s youth-led to Sawka’s paradoxically skeptical and heartfelt vision of America. Hanna Maria Sawka will relate her memories of a Californian who was prominent in the Sawka family’s life, Bob Schulberg, including his role in helping the family attain refuge in the United States.  Jan Sawka’s California Dream, as articulated in the exhibition, shifted and developed under the impact of the direct encounter with American reality. Bob Schulberg was an important part of that direct encounter, sharing Sawka’s critical sense of the absurd. This talk will explore the complexities of the California Dream, as it appears in Jan Sawka’s art, including the increasingly universal and problematic themes of the negative impact of over-commodification and market mentality, and the loneliness and isolation within a seeming “paradise.”

"I Love New York: The Big Apple, 1920-1960" Concert Performance

Friday, March 14, 2014

With artists in the studio, on the stage and in the streets of Manhattan, New York City has always been a hotbed of artistic creativity and collaboration. Join soprano Jamie Chamberlain, baritone David Castillo, pianist Victoria Kirsch and RAFFMA director Eva Kirsch for cocktails and a concert celebrating the highs and lows of the Big Apple during the middle years of the 20th century from Harlem to Broadway to the Lower East Side.

RAFFMA’s concert series offers snap shots of places, times or themes, at the same time attempting to cross boundaries of time, mixing and matching different art forms of different periods. “Music complements visual arts by offering additional dimensions or perspectives to that understanding,” Eva Kirsch, museum director, said, “When paintings and sculptures reach the limitation of their expressive abilities, leaving us cold, music may come to the rescue, touching the inner strings other arts cannot.”

Art History Lecture: "The Art of Magic in Ancient Egypt"

Friday, April 12, 2013
Speakers: Elizabeth Waraksa, Ph.D., Professor of Classics and Archaeology, Loyola Marymont University - Jacco Dieleman, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Egyptology, UCLA

Ancient Egyptian magical practices are the focus when two UCLA professors conduct an entertaining and richly illustrated lecture at RAFFMA.

Magic affected every aspect of ancient Egyptian life – from everyday healing to royal intrigues. The material remains of ancient Egyptian magical practices include fascinating magico-medical papyri, amulets, and assorted figurines. UCLA professors Jacco Dieleman and Elizabeth A. Waraksa will share the results of their personal investigations into the making and use of these artifacts, which were created to heal and protect.
Dieleman earned his Ph.D. from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands in 2005 and is working as associate professor of Egyptology in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at UCLA. Dieleman is currently preparing a text edition of an unpublished manuscript that is inscribed in demotic and hieratic with the instructions and incantations of the burial ritual performed for a woman named Artemis (The Artemis Liturgical Papyrus).
Waraksa is a lecturer in the Program of Study and Religion at UCLA. She received her Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from the Johns Hopkins University in 2007. Her work includes an entry on female figurines on the Pharaonic period in the UCLA Encyclopedia of Egyptology. She also has excavated sites, including an Etruscan/Roman site in Umbria and at the Precinct of the Goddess Mut at Karnak in Luxor. This summer, Waraksa will be joining UCLA’s excavation at Jaffa (Tel Aviv).

Art History Lecture "Chicano Muralists in Southern California"

Thursday, May 9, 2013

Speakers: Dr. Elliott R. Barkan, David Botello, and David Lopez

RAFFMA will host a fascinating discussion about the first generation of Chicano muralists in Southern California. Elliott R. Barkan, CSUSB Professor Emeritus, will talk with special guest artists David Botello and David Lopez. The public is invited to join the conversation.

In 1968, Barkan started documenting the often ephemeral works that vouched for the emergence of new people and their quests for identity, leadership, and civic equality. Since then, many of the murals have substantially deteriorated or have been completely destroyed.

Elliot R. Barkan received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and taught for 40 years at California State University, San Bernardino. He has written and edited 11 books, more than 30 articles and has lectured in 14 countries on five continents. His most significant and recent work is the 2,000-page encyclopedia on immigration and ethnicity in America, 1600 to 2010, which be designed and solely edited for ABC-Clio Books.

David Botello was raised in East Los Angeles and continues to live and work in the Los Angeles area. Botello contributed to the Estrada Court Murals in 1973 and helped establish the Goez Art Studio and Gallery in 1986, which was one of the first galleries to center primarily on Chicano art. Botello, along with artist Wayne Healy, founded East Los Streetscapers, of one of the first 1970's muralist groups.

A native of East Los Angeles, David Lopez attended the Art Center College of Design and majored in illustration before pursuing a career in the film industry. Lopez worked as a production painter, scenic artist, and background animation artist for movies and commercials. He has also worked with Robert Arenivar on a painting for the Pentagon of the Hispanic Medal of Honor winner and on a mural in an East Los Angeles bar that has been destroyed.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
