Research
A physics and astronomy degree at CSUSB comes with real research experience built in: about 80% of our majors do research with a faculty member before they graduate. Our department's work spans quantum optics and photonics, materials science, planetary atmospheres and meteor science, and near-field cosmology and galaxy evolution, from laboratory experiments to observational astronomy conducted at our own Murillo Family Observatory.

From quantum sensors built with nitrogen-vacancy diamond centers to tracking comets and the Martian atmosphere to mapping the earliest galaxies in the universe, our faculty study some of the most fundamental open questions in physics and astronomy. Get Involved
Most of our majors get involved in research through paid on-campus positions or external summer programs, see our Internships page for how to find a position. Our department is also active in a number of national programs and facilities:
- The Center for Advanced Functional Materials is a multi-institution collaboration on nanoscale materials research; Dr. Sara Callori is one of its department leads.
- The Cal-Bridge Program provides mentorship and financial support for students from underrepresented backgrounds pursuing physics and astronomy PhDs.
- The NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program funds paid summer research placements at institutions across the country.
- Our own Murillo Family Observatory gives students direct, hands-on experience in observational astronomy, including through its Student Involvement program.
