BSN Transfer Applicant Admission Requirements & Application Process

Transfer applicants are students who have completed all prerequisite courses at a community college or other institution. It is highly encouraged for transfer students to meet with a transfer advisor at their institution to ensure courses taken are equivalent and/or transferable to CSUSB.

*Requirements # 1 - 8 must be met for an application to be considered.

1. *Acceptance into CSUSB as a Pre-Nursing Student.
   • Due to impaction, CSUSB only accepts applications for Pre-Nursing during their Fall application period. (CSUSB Admissions)
2. *Attendance to a CSUSB Nursing Information Session during valid Information Session dates for the application period you are applying to. Please refer to the table on BSN Admissions page for valid dates. (Upcoming Information Sessions)

3. *Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) 

   • A minimum score of 70% on the most recent version of the Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI).

   • All TEAS must be taken during valid TEAS Testing Dates of the application period you are applying to. Please refer to the table on BSN Admissions page for valid dates.

   • A maximum of two ATI TEAS attempts will be allowed for consideration. The higher of the first two scores taken during the valid testing dates will be considered.

   • Official ATI TEAS results are to be submitted to the Department of Nursing by the application deadlines. After testing, applicants should request for a copy of their ATI Individual Performance Profile (IPP) transcript to be sent to the Department of Nursing. This copy is to be sent directly from ATI to CSUSB Department of Nursing.

     • On ATI website, select to send results to: CA State SB BSN or CA State PDC

   • In addition to current TEAS test results, students must send all results TEAS results to the Department of Nursing by the application deadline.

   • The Department of Nursing accepts both remote proctored and in person proctored TEAS exams.

4. *The GPA requirement includes both overall and prerequisite courses.

   • Overall Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater.

     • This GPA is calculated using ALL completed college course work.

   • Prerequisite GPA of 3.0 or greater, and achieved a course grade of C or higher in all 8 prerequisite courses.

     • This GPA is calculated using the first earned letter grade of each prerequisite course.

5. *Courses equivalent to the following 8 prerequisite support courses are required for consideration:

   • If courses were taken at a public California university or community college, check with your transfer advisor or check Assist.org listings under the Nursing (BS) major.

   • If Assist.org listings are unclear or other questions remain, contact the CSUSB Office of the Registrar for Evaluations.

   • The DON will accept credit/no-credit grades for prerequisite courses, but encourages applicants to receive letter grades for all prerequisite classes. If a Credit grade is received for a prerequisite course, this will be considered similar to an AP credit course which has no value in calculating GPAs.

   • At least 2 of the 4 prerequisite science courses AND at least 2 of the 4 prerequisite non-science courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C or higher to be considered.

     • All prerequisite courses for Fall semester admission must be completed by the end of the previous CSUSB Spring term.

     • All prerequisite courses for Spring semester admission must be completed by the end of the previous CSUSB Fall term.

   • Prerequisite science courses:

     • Course that is considered equivalent to BIOL 2200 Microbiology for Allied Health Majors (4 units), or a course that is considered acceptable for Nursing majors per Assist.org.

     • Course that is considered equivalent to BIOL 2230 Human Anatomy and Physiology I for Allied Health Majors (4 units), or a course that is considered acceptable for Nursing majors per Assist.org.

     • Course that is considered equivalent to BIOL 2240 Human Anatomy and Physiology II for Allied Health Majors (4 units), or a course that is considered acceptable for Nursing majors per Assist.org.

     • Course that is considered equivalent to CHEM 2070 Fundamentals of General, Organic & Biochemistry (5 units), or a course that is considered acceptable for Nursing majors per Assist.org.

   • Prerequisite non-science courses:

     • Course that fulfills GE Category A2 Written Communication (3 units).

     • Course that fulfills GE Category A3 Critical Thinking (3 units).

     • Course that fulfills GE Category A1 Oral Communication (3 units).

     • Course that is considered equivalent to Math 1201 Introduction to Statistical Thinking (3 units).

   • PSYC 2201 is not a required prerequisite course to be considered to the program, however it is a prerequisite course for each of the first semester nursing courses (NURS 2602, NURS 2821, NURS 3016). A course equivalent to PSYC 2201 should be taken as soon as possible after PSYC 1100 and before taking NURS 2601, NURS 2821, and NURS 3016.

     • Your grade for PSYC 2201 will be used in the cumulative GPA calculation, NOT in the prerequisite GPA calculation.

6. *All past and current post-secondary transcripts must be submitted to CSUSB by the application deadline.

   • Evidence of completion of all 8 prerequisites is an expectation for consideration of admission.

   • If a prerequisite course is in progress at an institution other than CSUSB, applicants must submit official transcripts to CSUSB showing the course is in progress by the application deadline. Once the course is completed, applicants must resubmit official transcripts reflecting the final course grade.

7. *California Residency per requirements for Admission to CSU Impacted Programs (CSUSB Impaction Information)

8. *Once requirements #1 - #7 have been completed, applicants must submit the online pre-licensure BSN application during the valid application period (will become available during application period on the BSN Admissions website.)

9. Additional consideration and preference is given to:

   • Residents of the CSUSB local area.

     • See the CSUSB website for the University’s definition of its local area (CSUSB-FAQs)

   • Applicants who are veterans of the U.S. Armed Services.

   • Applicants who are bilingual

     • Bilingual proficiency is to be documented in one of the following ways:

       • Completion of three (3) years of one foreign language in high school course work with a grade of C or higher in each course as reflected on an official high school transcript.

       • Completion of the equivalent of a college/university intermediate level foreign language course, such as a 1112 (Quarter Equivalent: 103) foreign language course at CSUSB, with a grade of C or higher.

       • California State Seal of Biliteracy.

       • Students should direct questions to the Department of Nursing Office.

Transfer Application Process

1. Acceptance to CSUSB as a Pre-Nursing student.
   • Only students admitted to the university as a pre-nursing student will be eligible for consideration and acceptance into the nursing pre-licensure program, leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
   • Students cannot submit a change of major to Pre-Nursing / Nursing once they have been admitted to the university under a different major.

2. Completion of the Admission Requirements #1 - #7.

3. Completion of the online pre-licensure BSN application during the valid application period (will become available during application period on the BSN Admissions website.)

4. Submission of all course work:

   • Fall Applicants: If admitted to the Fall term, final transcripts showing all completed prerequisite courses must be submitted by July 1.

   • Spring Applicants: If admitted to the Spring term, final transcripts showing all completed prerequisite courses must be submitted by January 3.

5. Applicants are notified of conditional BSN admission or of denial by an email sent to applicant CSUSB student emails, starting the late March for Fall term applicants, and starting late September for Spring term applicants.

   • Admitted students have 5 working days from date of notification letter to respond indicating acceptance or declination of admission.

   • Prior to starting classes, accepted students will be directed to present an acceptable criminal background check and health compliance as required by clinical agencies and will be expected to present a valid Social Security Number/Card (SSN), and California driver license. (Applicants are to contact the Department of Nursing office for questions or concerns).

   • Attending the BSN program requires additional Prominent Costs (e.g, clinical and lab compliance checks and fees, clinical uniforms and materials, textbooks and learning/testing materials.

   • Applicants who have taken previous courses in nursing and/or health-related fields may qualify for course credit under the Credit by Examination policy (Credit by Examination).
