Watson and Associates Literacy Center (WALC) is an integral partnership between local school districts, the community, and the university. Since its 2004 inception, the WALC continues to service scores of K-12 students in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Assessments administered by the highly qualified administrators pinpoint tutees’ current academic levels. Instructional Student Assistances (WALC tutors) collaborate with the literacy supervisors to generate customized tutee instructional plans that align with the CA Common Core Standards.

Leveling the resurgence of the COVID Pandemic and the subsequent flooding in the center during a major storm, the WALC made a strong comeback. Parental requests that led to successful virtual tutoring have now become a vibrant hybrid program. The WALC also added math to its span of support. Math tutorials that began with grades 4 through 10 evolved to the provision of math instruction to all grade levels.

Collaborating with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, the WALC in unification with the Watson College of Education hosts an annual Reading Rally. This year, ten school district partners sent students. Nearly sixteen hundred TK-2 grade students attended the rally, which surpassed last year’s twelve hundred attendance numbers. Community businesses hosted tables during the event, acknowledging their support to the value of reading. The WALC continues to de-silo literacy and math instruction in the community.
