
This internship program conducted by the CSUSB Career Center will provide students from Higher Education, Student Affairs, and Counseling-based graduate programs with the opportunity to observe and learn from counselors, professional staff, campus partners & employer stakeholders to gain knowledge of the operations and collaborations of a career center.
The outcome for students is to develop their professionalism and enhance their applicable skills by putting into practice counseling theories and methods within a career development setting. The goal of the program is to assist participants with building relevant skills and applications performed in a higher education professional environment under the guidance and tutelage of experienced educators.

Position Description & Expectations
- One-on-one and group career counseling/facilitation techniques.
- Facilitating small and large group presentations on topics ranging from major/career exploration, resume/cover letter development, internship/job search, interviewing strategies, networking tips, graduate school prep, and more.
- Supporting diverse student populations to include but not limited to international students, students with disabilities, neurodiverse, and veteran populations.
- Utilizing technical tools and platforms to provide pre-assessments, resume reviews, job/internship strategies, and interview feedback.
- An overview of vocational assessments such as Myers-Briggs (MBTI), Strong Interest Inventory, and CliftonStrengths.
- Guiding students during drop-in hours and scheduled appointments.
- Writing appropriate case notes for drop-in hours and scheduled appointments.
- Integrating career counseling theories, case studies, best practices, and relevant professional development resources.
- Participating in a formal 2-3 weeks of training including shadowing, case studies, and career readiness/development strategies and resources.
- Aligning internship with the National Career Development Association (NCDA), American Counseling Association (ACA), National Association of Student Affairs Administrators (NASPA), and National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
- Engage in one-hour, weekly one-on-one on-site supervision meetings.
- Engage in ongoing professional development aligned with program objectives.
- Commit to 15-20 hours per week / at least 2 days per week.
- Commit to at least two semesters.
To Become A Career Coach Intern...
- Be a student currently enrolled in a Higher Education, Student Affairs, and Counseling-based graduate program,
- Have ‘Good Academic Standing’ (meets satisfactory academic progress), and
- The initiative to expand upon counseling theories, knowledge and their applications.

Yes, selected candidates will be invited for a qualifications interview. Interviews are expected to take place late July and early August 2025.
First day of internship is expected before Fall 2025 semester begins (week of August 18).
Yes, all selected participants will undergo training to perform effective practices of career and student development competencies, applications, and resources alongside gaining the professional knowledge and experience of the functions and operations of a career center.
