Project Title: The Redlands Bicycle Classic 2023

Instructor(s): Lucas Cuny, Kevin Lyons

Course(s): Sports Broadcasting, Comm 2392 Local Matters TV

Lucas Cuny and Kevin Lyons used the support of Pathways to Success and integrated experiential learning in their classrooms. Cuny writes, "The Inland Empire has a rich history of sports, from baseball to football. But another way the IE stands out is through its history of racing. Both Auto and Cycling. The Orange Show Speedway has hosted stock car to midget car racing since 1947. The Redlands bicycle classic is one of the premiere cycling events in the world and has been in the IE since 1985. Working through the Sports Broadcasting class at San Bernardino Valley College in Conjunction with the CSUSB course Comm 2393 Local Matters TV. The two colleges has produced content highlighting the IE’s local racing seen. This is a collaboration between Kevin Lyons teaching at CSUSB and myself. The goal will be to broadcast a races and pre-race show for both entities. These productions will air on KVCR and be available for Local Matters."

With this project, they produced a small film shown on the Redlands Bicycle Classic.

Project Title: Taytayan

Course(s):  ENGL 101, COMMST 100

San Bernardino Valley College introduces “Taytayan,” a learning community for Asian and Pacific Islander students. In Cebuano, “Taytayan” means “bridge,” emphasizing mentorship, advocacy, and community within the academic journey. This community offers a unique lens for students to explore their cultural heritage while pursuing academic excellence. Centered on the Asian and Pacific Islander perspective, “Taytayan” serves as a guiding bridge for navigating academic and personal development and is open to all SBVC students. The cohort integrates courses ENGL 101 and COMMST 100, enhancing cultural awareness through semester-long projects in Spring 2024

Project Title: Marketing the Gresham Gallery

Instructor(s): Frank Houlihan, Mandi Batalo

School(s): San Bernardino Valley College, CSUSB

Course(s):  DES 4015, ART 161

Senior Design Class, DES4015(60), will collaborate with SBVC’s Mandi Batalo, Art Department Chair, to create marketing materials for the Gresham Gallery.  Students will use the mission of the Gresham Gallery of developing a collaborative space to encourage dialogue/collaboration about the arts and social issues in the touchpoints they develop. The Senior Design Class working in small groups in project-based learning to develop a marketing plan for the gallery using printed collateral, social media, web development, video, and animation to advertise and market the gallery.  The project will be completed by May 1, 2023. Visiting the Gresham, the teams will meet and collaborate with Valley College students from Art-161 Photography. The learning outcome goals include demonstrating leadership / involvement in their community / school and developing the desire and motivation to succeed in alignment with the goals of the Pathways to Success program.

Project Title: Experiential Learning Project: Podcasting

Instructor(s): Brady Kerr, Kiandra Jimenez

School(s): Norco College

Course(s): English

English students explored podcast recording, applying rhetoric, research, and oral narratives. Integrated into the Umoja program, it responded to students' interest in audio recording. The partnership aimed to showcase the practical applications of English and research skills in jobs, emphasizing rhetoric in audio broadcasting careers. It also encouraged career exploration and immersed the students in the rich tradition of Black rhetoric. Students within English courses created brief podcast episodes (eight minutes or less) on culturally relevant topics connected to their communities and families. They recorded their submissions with Music Industry Studies students (Alex Rodgers and Michael Ortiz) in the Norco College recording studio, after which the MIS students edited and refined the recordings. Upon completion, they were guided to submit their podcasts to NPR’s (National Public Radio) College Podcast contest, fostering a sense of achievement.

Project Title: Picture Your Potential Workshop

Course(s): Arts & Humanities

Pathways to Success Peer Mentor Jorge Paz presented a special portfolio session in the CSUSB Visual Arts Building for arts and humanities students new to portfolio creation. Approximately 20 attendees participated, with 15 present in person and 5 joining via Zoom. Notably, students from outside CSUSB also attended. Positive feedback highlighted the workshop's efficacy in emphasizing the value of a portfolio and the importance of its creation. Key insights included discussions on the significance of LinkedIn profiles, strategies for personal branding, and navigating social media's professional and personal spheres. One attendee expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from fellow students and share insights on marketing themselves and their work. Overall, the workshop provided valuable guidance for students embarking on their career paths within the arts and humanities, fostering both skill development and networking opportunities.
