Asset Based Teaching

Implementing Pedagogy Strategies:

Asset based and growth mindset teaching is a form of culturally relevant or responsive pedagogy that promotes academic success. These pedagogical methods eschew a deficit-based approach to teaching and benefit our students by instilling a sense of inclusion in the curriculum. With colleagues from our region, experience the practice of implementing these strategies in your courses.

  • Asset Based Teaching benefits our students by instilling a sense of inclusion in the curriculum
  • Engages students in their academic programs
  • Improves student outcomes
  • Culturally responsive pedagogy and a growth mindset pedagogy

Faculty need support – models, tools, coaching, collaborative partners, and community – to redesign their curricula and teach in new ways. Furthermore, bringing professional development efforts to scale requires a focus not just on broad outreach but on facilitating “deep and consequential change” for participants. Faculty Learning Communities have proven to be an effective means for bringing about this kind of “deep and consequential change.”

Together, we can implement these strategies in your courses!
