Title: Project Director

Prof. Brian Heisterkamp (Ph.D.) joined CSUSB in 2001 as a professor in the Department of Communication Studies. He wrote two U.S. Department of Education Title V grants, each bringing approximately $3 million to CSUSB. He is the project director for the most recent grant, the Pathways to Success program, that aims to enhance the career readiness of students in arts and humanities disciplines at CSUSB, Norco College, and San Bernardino Valley College. He is also active in prison education programs including the Prison Arts Collective and the Inside-Out Prison Exchange program, both of which aim to bring educational opportunities to those who are incarcerated.

Title: Project Outreach Coordinator

As a first-generation Latina student, Alexis Felix has personally experienced some of the struggles common to students such as figuring out financial aid, the transfer process and fear of picking a major. Overcoming these challenges alone were not easy, but they have fueled her passion for helping students who are in the shoes she was once in. With three years of experience in peer mentoring, Alexis is confident and excited to continue helping students achieve their academic goals. Alexis is a proud SBVC and CSUSB Alumni. She is currently a Graduate student at the University of Redlands pursuing her master's in education for school and college counseling. She loves to bake and travel!

Title: Administrative Assistant

Alberto Rendon is the Administrative Assistant for the Pathways to Success grant. He graduated from CSUSB in 2016 with two B.A.’s in Communications: one in Public Relations and the other Mass Communications, and a minor in Film Studies. He is currently a graduate student as part of CSUSB’s
Communication program. He is a big fan of pop culture and considers himself to be a giant nerd.

Title: Director of Studio Incubator

Professor Oakes has taught in the Art and Design department at CSUSB since 2006. He is also art director and owner of Green Acres Creative, a boutique design agency that services multiple clients in various industries. He enjoys providing inspiration and guidance to young designers looking to build a career for themselves in the design industry. As Director of the Studio Incubator he feels this is the exact type of experience students need to be successful and get their foot in the door for their first professional job.

Title: Studio Incubator Lead Designer

Krista Wilkie is a student at CSUSB who is completing her final year as an undergraduate in graphic design and marketing. She enjoys creating promotional materials and brand identity and finds great joy in forming the creative ideas from clients into something they can see and love. As the studio incubator assistant, Krista always has new and exciting projects to work on, which enhances her experience and career readiness. She is always ready to learn and apply her skills to the real world.

Title: Dean of Arts and Humanities at SBVC

Leticia Hector has served as Dean of Arts and Humanities at San Bernardino Valley College since January of 2020. Before moving into administration, she was a professor of Communication Studies at San Bernardino Valley College for 18 years.  During her tenure as Faculty, she served as Faculty Chair of various departments, Curriculum Committee Chair, Vice President of her local Academic Senate, ASCCC online committee member & California Community College Curriculum Committee member. Her 20+ years in higher education continues to fuel her passion in supporting our mission as educators, looking for continued opportunities to serve our students and community.

Name: Mandi Batalo

Title: Department Chair/Professor Art Department

Dr. Mandi Batalo is the SBVC Art Department chair and a design and photography professor. She was the SBVC activities coordinator for the successful Here to Career grant and continues in that role with the Pathways to Success grant. Her passion is helping students find their way in the arts and humanities.

Title: Assistant Professor, Music Industry Studies/Music

Brady Kerr is a Grammy®-nominated educator, a voting member of The Recording Academy, and has been in the music and theater business for over 40 years. He is a classically trained pianist and vocalist, an award-winning composer, and a Berklee College of Music in Music Production graduate. Brady is full-time faculty in the Music Industry Studies program at Norco College, where he teaches Digital Audio Production, Pro Tools, Songwriting, Recording Studio Workshop, and Performance Techniques for Studio Recording courses. He is also the director of Studio Arts Ensemble, Norco College’s live performance ensemble. As an Avid Certified Instructor in Pro Tools | Music, Brady has proctored certification exams for hundreds of students since 2010, helping them become certified “specialists” and “professionals” in the industry-standard music production software. Under his leadership, the Music Industry Studies program has released 21 albums under the moniker Norco Music, all available on www.norcomusic.com [norcomusic.com], Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, and anywhere else you stream music.

Title: Career Counselor

Sarai Maldonado is an equity-minded professional with a wealth of experience spanning over 15 years in both private and public higher education. She holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Redlands and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from California State University San Bernardino. Sarai’s primary focus centers on facilitating successful transitions for students as they progress into the professional world, a vital objective for any institution of higher learning. Her extensive background encompasses a range of critical areas within higher education, including career counseling, program assessment, employer engagement, networking initiatives. Her contributions are pivotal in equipping students with the essential lifelong skills and knowledge required to navigate the continually evolving landscape of the labor market. Sarai Maldonado’s commitment to equity and dedication to student success make her a valuable asset to the educational community. As a student advocate, Sarai’s role as chapter Advisor for Sigma Pi Alpha is also noteworthy. This sorority’s focus on promoting campus involvement, academics, health, and cultural awareness aligns well with Sarai’s holistic approach to education. It’s great that she encourages students to engage in these areas, which will help them become well-rounded individuals and professionals. She empowers social and economic mobility through education, networking, and global resources.
