Applying for Admission

To be eligible for admission, you must complete all transfer admission requirements before beginning the program.

While certain concentration-specific courses are required for some emphasis areas, they do not need to be completed before admission. Planning your transfer early is the best way to ensure a smooth admission process.

Eligibility Checklist

You may be eligible to apply if you:

  • Have 60+ transferable semester units (90 quarter units)
  • Have completed your lower-division general education requirements
  • Have completed the Golden Four with a grade of C- or better
  • Have completed the CSU History, Constitution, and American Ideals Requirement (US-1, US-2, US-3)
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of:
    • 2.0 for undergraduate admission
    • 2.5 for post-baccalaureate admission (applicants earning a second bachelor's degree)
  • Are in good academic standing at the last college or university attended

If you are unsure about any of these requirements, continue reading for additional details.

Detailed Eligibility Requirements

Transfer Units

You must be an upper-division transfer student with at least:

  • 60 transferable semester units, or
  • 90 transferable quarter units

Up to 70 lower-division units may be accepted for transfer.

General Education

You must complete all lower-division general education requirements prior to admission.

Completing only the Golden Four does not satisfy the general education requirement. You must complete your full lower-division general education pattern before admission, typically through CSU GE Breadth or Cal-GETC certification.

Golden Four Requirement

All applicants must complete the Golden Four with a grade of C- or better in each course:

  • English Communication (Area 1A)
  • Critical Thinking (Area 1B)
  • Oral Communication (Area 1C)
  • Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning (Area 2)

CSU History, Constitution, and American Ideals Requirement

All applicants must complete the CSU History, Constitution, and American Ideals Requirement (also known as the American Institutions Requirement), commonly referred to as US-1, US-2, and US-3 prior to admission. This requirement cannot be completed after admission to the program, and is one of the most commonly missed admission requirements for this program.

Applicants who have not completed all three areas (US-1, US-2, and US-3) are not eligible for admission. We strongly recommend that you review your transcripts and confirm completion of this requirement with your college counselor before applying.

This requirement is typically satisfied by completing two lower-division courses:

  • One U.S. History course covering at least 100 years of U.S. history (US-1: American History)
  • One Political Science course covering:
    • The U.S. Constitution and government (US-2: Constitution and Government), and
    • California state and local government (US-3: California State and Local Government)

Why might I not have completed this requirement?

  • It is not included in IGETC or CSU GE-Breadth patterns
  • It is not required for UC admission or most non-CSU universities
  • At many CSU campuses, it can be completed after transfer to an in-person program, so it may not have been emphasized during community college advising
  • You may not have been aware of the requirement unless you specifically planned to transfer to a CSU
  • You completed most of your coursework outside of California
  • You are an out-of-state student

Concentration Prerequisites

The Online Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences offers several concentration options. Most concentrations do not require additional lower-division prerequisite coursework before beginning the program. However, students pursuing the following concentrations must complete the listed course (or an equivalent) before enrolling in their upper-division concentration courses. These courses are not required for admission and may be completed after admission if needed.

Sociology Concentration

Students pursuing the Sociology concentration must complete SOC 1000 – Introduction to Sociology (or an approved equivalent) prior to beginning their upper-division Sociology concentration coursework.

Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies Concentration

Students pursuing the Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies (CAFS) concentration must complete CAFS 2240 - Introduction to Child Development (or an approved equivalent) prior to beginning their upper-division CAFS concentration coursework.

Equivalent courses completed at another accredited college or university may satisfy these requirements. California community college students can use ASSIST.org to identify articulated course equivalents.

How to Submit Official Transcripts

All applicants are required to submit official documents to complete the application process. Previous and in-progress coursework must be completed and reflected in these final transcripts. All final official transcripts must be received by the specified deadline; however, CSUSB's College of Extended & Global Education recommends submitting requests for documents at least ten business days prior to the listed deadline as transcript requests are not immediate and require processing time from the institution you attended.

Select the appropriate buttons below for additional information on how to submit official transcripts for undergraduate/transfer applicants and post-baccalaureate applicants (applicants earning a second bachelor's degree):
