Overview
School Audiometrists play an important role in supporting student health by conducting hearing assessments that help identify potential hearing concerns early.
This fully online course provides a comprehensive introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, the nature of sound, common hearing disorders, the challenges experienced by individuals with hearing loss, and the fundamentals of pure tone audiometry.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants may apply for a Certificate of Registration as a School Audiometrist through the California Department of Health Services. This credential prepares participants to make a meaningful difference in educational settings by helping ensure students receive the support they need to succeed.
Benefits
- This course meets the requirements needed to apply for certification as a California School Audiometrist.
- Students will complete coursework independently in an online format while developing the knowledge and technical skills needed to use precision hearing testing equipment and perform screening and threshold tests.
- Students will also learn how to maintain accurate records and prepare required reports.
- Upon successful completion of the course, students will earn 3 semester units of degree-applicable college credit.
- No formal application to the main university is required to enroll in this program.
Outcomes
Management of the Hearing Conservation program is commonly delegated to the school nurse. As a result, many school districts require school nurses to hold a certification as a School Audiometrist. Non-nurse individuals may also seek certification as a School Audiometrist if they plan to seek employment with outside agencies that contract with school districts to administer their Hearing Conservation programs.
