Accounting Certificate FAQs

Are Official transcript needed to be admitted to the program?

YES. As of May 2024, Official transcripts are required for admission and to evaluation previously taken courses for potential transfer of u nits.

Most schools provide an option to request your transcript electronically and have them sent directly to the Accounting Certificate Program staff. You'll receive an email reply when you submit your program application, inviting you to request and have sent your previous transcripts.

Any high school diploma or previous college transcript can be used for admission to the Accounting Certificate program.

To have previous college-level courses reviewed for possible transfer credit, applicants must request an Official transcript from EACH SCHOOL where classes were taken. (If you took classes at a community college and had them transferred to your undergrad program, they WILL NOT appear on the transcript of your BA/BS program.)

What options do students have for financing the Certificate program?

The program does not accept federal or state aid (via the FAFSA). However, we do offer alternative loans with preferred vendors, and write payment plans per semester.

Do credits transfer to a Bachelor’s degree?

This program is not intended to be a “short cut” to a Bachelor’s degree. If you are taking the Certificate classes and hoping to transfer the units to another school, contact that school about their policies on transfer units.

What if I need to interrupt my program?

The program is flexible! Your admission never expires, and you may take time off from the program as needed. Because students don’t matriculate to the University (admission with the intention of pursuing a degree), you can take as long as needed to complete the courses.

What does a cohort schedule mean?

Classes are scheduled to build based on prerequisites. Each course builds on previous ones. The cohort schedule means that each course is only offered in its specific session. For example, ACCT 3720 is only offered in session 2, both Spring and Fall semesters. See the course schedule on the right hand blue button on this page for more details.

Does this program lead to the MSA?

The Certificate program contains the prerequisites for our MS in Accountancy program. Students with a Bachelor’s degree that is not in Accounting will need to complete the prerequisites (the Certificate program) before applying to the MSA program. Note that ACCT 3470 is a prerequisite for the MSA, but only an optional course in the Certificate requirements; it is offered every Session 2.

Does this program prepare me to take the CPA exam?

You’ll learn concepts and content that will appear on the CPA exam. The program offers 18-21 units of Accounting courses and one Business course. The courses alone are not sufficient to qualify you to take the CPA exam. See the CPA Uniform Handbook, posted on the MSA program homepage for more information.

Are the classes really just 5 weeks long?

Yes! These are semester-long classes stuffed into 5-week sessions. Note that Summer session is really about 4 ½ weeks. Organization and attention to the course syllabus help students to succeed in these accelerated classes.

What jobs are available for me if I complete the certificate?

Many accounting jobs require some experience, or may substitute coursework on a year-to-year basis. Comb job listings for experience and education requirements. With a current shortage in the Accounting field, opportunities abound.

Does the school offer career advising or internship opportunities?

While we don’t have direct advising or internship connections, staff periodically send out information about job and internship openings with regional firms and government agencies. Also, all student sin the program may attend job fairs and recruitment events on campus.

What if I took some accounting classes at another school already?

We accept up to 2 equivalent courses in transfer. Once you apply to the program, you’ll be invited to send your transcript for admission review.

How fast can I complete the program?

Taking two classes each 5-week session, you can complete the program in under 6 months.
