HSI Symposium

HSI Symposium

This symposium will bring together students, faculty, staff, and community partners to discuss the impact of our Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) designation, share best practices, and advance student success initiatives.

Freedom dreaming is the practice of imagining and envisioning a liberated, just, and equitable future, using imagination as a tool for personal and collective empowerment.

Concept and Practice
Freedom dreaming is a process of visualizing the future we want to live in.“The idea of freedom dreaming comes from Black radical traditions and is grounded in political and intellectual engagement, self-determination, and social movements (Kelley, 2002). Freedom dreaming is about imagining a better future for minoritized people, even if you can’t see that future (Kelley, 2002). I dream about HSIs as spaces of justice and liberation. I dream about HSIs as something distinct and unique” (Garcia, 2023, p. 2)

“My hopes and goals for HSIs' to become spaces that advance racial equity, social justice, and collective liberation and that commit to enacting a liberatory, humanizing, and emancipatory approach to education…a utopian vision; it’s a freedom dream; it’s an organization that does not yet exist” (Garcia, 2023, p. 9).
