Immersive Learning Spaces
An immersive learning space is an interactive environment that uses advanced technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, motion capture, and 3D design tools like Blender and Unreal Engine to create engaging, hands-on educational experiences. These spaces are designed to spark creativity, encourage collaboration, and enhance teaching and training in ways that promote deeper student engagement and stronger content retention. By moving beyond the limits of the traditional classroom, immersive learning spaces provide dynamic opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to explore, create, and apply knowledge in new and innovative ways.
At CSUSB, this vision is being realized through the ITS Strategic Plan 3.4: Immersive Learning Spaces. In the basement of the Pfau Library (PL003), the Multimedia and Immersive Technologies Department, and xREAL Lab and in partnership with PAWS Radio & Multimedia Learning Lab (IW 204), Palm Desert Campus has developed a dedicated immersive learning space where faculty, staff, and students can experience and experiment with virtual reality content. Equipped with META Quest 2 headsets and other cutting-edge tools, this space serves as a hub for learning, exploration, and innovation. It supports the university’s mission to advance teaching and learning through technology while opening the door for new projects, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of immersive media that transforms both instruction and research.

PAWS Radio & Multimedia Learning Lab (IW 204) Palm Desert Campus
PAWS Radio & Multimedia Lab is a hands-on creative space at CSUSB where students learn broadcasting, audio production, video storytelling, and emerging media technologies like virtual reality. Home to the student-run PAWS Radio station and guided by industry professionals such as Professor Lacey Kendall, the lab gives students real-world experience in producing podcasts, live shows, interviews, and immersive digital content. It is a space where creativity, technology, and storytelling come together to empower the next generation of media professionals.
The Meta Quest VR headset is an all-in-one virtual reality device made by Meta that lets people experience immersive digital worlds without needing a computer or game console. Everything is built into the headset, including the screens, sensors, and computer, so users can simply put it on and start exploring. The headset uses special lenses and cameras to track your head and hand movements, creating a 3D environment that moves naturally as you do. With its handheld controllers, you can interact with virtual objects, play games, watch 360-degree videos, or explore educational simulations.
