Below, you can explore the services we offer to currently enrolled students—including individual and group counseling, crisis support, case management, wellness workshops, and more. Looking for a quiet space for your session or need a letter of support? We’ve got that too. Your Privacy Matters
All contacts with Counseling and Psychological Services are confidential, except in situations where legal or ethical considerations require notification of a family member or others. Notice of Privacy Practices.
Counseling and Psychological Services does not release any information regarding whether a student has used the service nor matters discussed in counseling. Except under certain specific circumstances, no parent, dean, faculty member, or other student can gain access to information about a client without express written permission.
Exceptions
- A student who has used CAPS services may give authorization to release records or to disclose information to anyone the student chooses. However, a request to exchange confidential information must first be completed and signed.
- If the counselor believes that there is danger to self or others, safety considerations will prevail, and the counselor will notify appropriate family members or other authority. Such disclosure is for the purpose of providing the necessary care and protection of the student.
- In very rare circumstances, the court may order the release of confidential information.
- Unlicensed counselors work under the supervision of a licensed counselor who has access to counseling records in order to perform supervision responsibilities. In addition, a student may grant permission for a counselor to audiotape or videotape a session for the counselor to review with his/her supervisor.
- Counselors are mandated reporters of suspected elder or child abuse and must notify the appropriate agencies.

Individual Counseling
Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or just need someone to talk to? Counseling may help—and we’re here for you.
Here’s what to expect:
- Confidential, one-on-one support with a professional counselor
- A safe space to talk about anything—stress, anxiety, relationships, identity, academics, and more
- A short-term approach focused on helping you feel better and build coping tools
- No pressure to commit—you can start with just one session to see how it feels

Couples Counseling
In a relationship and looking to strengthen it? We offer short-term couples counseling for enrolled CSUSB students.
Here’s what to know:
- Available only if both partners are currently enrolled CSUSB students
- In-person sessions, typically 60-90 minutes
- Work with a counselor together as a couple
- Focus on goals like:
- Improving communication
- Strengthening connection
- Managing conflict in healthy ways
- Building problem-solving skills

Group Counseling
You’re not alone—group counseling can be a great way to connect with others who are dealing with similar challenges.
Why try group counseling?
- Get support from others who “get it”
- Learn new ways to cope and communicate
- Feel less alone with what you’re going through
- Improve how you relate to others
What to know:
- Groups can focus on topics like anxiety, relationships, identity, and more
- Open to all CSUSB students
- Most groups require a brief screening appointment before joining
- Days and times vary based on student needs

Case Management
Need Help Finding Resources? We’ve Got You.
Not sure where to start or just need some extra support? Our case manager can help you figure out what’s available both on and off campus. Just ask our front desk to set up a case management appointment.
What is Case Management?
It’s one-on-one support to help you find resources like food, housing, health care, and more. We’ll talk about what you’re going through and connect you to appropriate resources.
Some resources we can help with:
- Food & Basic Needs: Food banks, EBT/Cal Fresh, hygiene kits, emergency supplies.
- Health & Mental Health: Medi-Cal applications, off-campus therapy (individual, couples, family), ADHD/autism evaluations, substance use support.
- Housing & Safety: Help finding housing, emergency shelters, domestic violence resources.
- Life Situations: Job help, parenting support, and other programs you might not even know exist.
- And more!

Walk-In Crisis Appointments
Feeling overwhelmed or in urgent distress? CAPS offers a limited number of same-day Walk-In Crisis Appointments to support students with immediate needs.
What you need to know:
- Designed for urgent mental health concerns – these are not a therapy or counseling session
- Focused on:
- Assessing your immediate needs
- Providing short-term crisis support
- Offering guidance or referrals for follow-up care
- Available in-person or virtually, depending on our availability that day
Very limited availability – If the offered time doesn’t fit your schedule, consider adjusting your schedule based on the urgency of your need.

Let's Talk (Drop-In)
Got something on your mind but not ready for full-on therapy? Let’s Talk is a casual, virtual drop-in service where you can chat one-on-one with a CAPS counselor—no appointment, no pressure. Starting this Fall 2025!
Here’s what to know:
- Open to all currently enrolled CSUSB & PDC students
- Not therapy—just a quick, supportive conversation (20–25 minutes)
- Great for:
- First-timers curious about counseling
- Quick check-ins or advice on a specific issue
- Learning more about CAPS services and resources
- Common topics: stress, relationships, family, school, money, anxiety, and more
- Happens virtually on Zoom from 12–1 PM every 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the semester
- No appointment needed—just click the Zoom link or scan the flyer QR code

Let’s Talk is:
- Free and confidential (with a few safety exceptions)
- A great first step if you’re unsure about counseling
- Not a crisis service or a replacement for therapy

Letters of Support
One of the services we offer is providing Letters of Support to help with things like academic accommodations, medical withdrawals, or connecting with outside providers. If you’ve been working with one of our therapists and need documentation related to your mental health, we may be able to help.
Here’s what you need to know:
- You must have an established a clinical relationship with a therapist at CAPS
- Letters are given at your clinician’s discretion, based on your treatment history and current needs
- We follow ADA guidelines for disability-related documentation
- Requests must be made at least 5 business days in advance
- A Release of Information (ROI) form must be completed before we can provide the letter
- If you are a former student, you can still access your records if you meet the requirements above.
Note on Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Letters:
CAPS clinicians are not trained to assess animal behavior, so we cannot provide letters or documentation for ESAs. However, we may be able to provide documentation about your mental health symptoms and diagnosis if you're an established client and it's clinically appropriate.

Wellness Workshops
Want to learn helpful ways to manage stress, anxiety, or just take better care of your mental health? Our wellness workshops are a great place to start—no ongoing counseling required.
What to expect:
- One-time, drop-in style sessions—easy to join
- Offered in-person and virtually on Zoom for your convenience
- Learn practical tools in a relaxed and supportive space
- Open to all CSUSB students
Past workshops have included:
