Guidelines and Instructions

Students | Internship Guidelines

Internships are opportunities for students to gain skills, work experience, while earning academic credit. Below are the JHBC internship guidelines: 

  • Current junior, senior, or graduate JHBC student
  • Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA (unless otherwise specified)
  • Seek internships that are relevant to the major or concentration
  • Unpaid internships require course enrollment
  • Students requiring CPT must have an internship as part of the degree requirements
  • Required documents must be completed prior to enrolling in an internship course  
  • With paid internships, enrollment in an internship course is optional; however, internship courses count as an elective within most concentrations 
  • Internships at current employers are only permitted for newly appointed positions; existing positions do not qualify for internship credit

Instructions | Searching for Internships

Students are not placed in internships, the process is similar to a job search. Utilize online and campus resources to research and apply. When an internship is offered and accepted, proceed below to enrolling for credit.

Step 1 | Prepare a Résumé

Students are encouraged to seek assistance in preparing a résumé before applying for internships. A résumé is typically the preferred method when applying for internships.

Step 2 | Research and Apply

Finding an internship is similar to a job search. Students must be active and apply often. 

Below are a few recommendations to guide the internship search.

  • JHBC Website | Includes internships specifically for JHBC students 
  • LinkedIn | Utilize LinkedIn to follow companies and connect with recruiters, HR managers, and talent acquisition employees at organizations of interest. The LinkedIn search function can identify internships in a particular geographical or  Students are welcomed and encourage to connect with the JHBC Internship Coordinator, as opportunities are shared on a regular basis - LinkedIn.
  • Handshake | This is an option for students to review job and internship opportunities. Access Handshake by logging into MyCoyote.
  • Organization Websites | Locate organizations of interest and review websites for potential openings. Consider sending emails of interest to the HR Manager/Department, or applying for open positions.  
  • Google | Utilize Google to search for internships for concentrations in a particular area (e.g. "Management internships in San Bernardino, CA")
  • Government Jobs | Search for government internships in a particular area
Step 3 | Enrollment Requirements 

Enrollment is required when the internship is: 

  • Unpaid at a for-profit company

Enrollment is optional when the internship is: 

  • Unpaid at a public agency or non-profit organization (e.g., City, County, Government, Boys and Girls Club)
  • Paid at a for-profit company

For most concentrations, the internship courses (ADMN 5753) will count in the major, concentration electives; therefore enrollment is encouraged. 

Students enrolling for credit should follow the steps below. Internship enrollment must occur at the onset of the internship - credit for internships previously completed will not be approved.

 

Instructions | Enrolling in an Internship Course

After an internship is secured, students should begin completing the steps below.

  • Internship courses require department consent - students cannot self-enroll.
  • Students are successfully enrolled by the Internship Coordinator after items below are received and approved. ADMN 5753 is the designated undergraduate and graduate course for enrollment. In specific instances, ADMN 6753 may be utilized.  

Please note: tuition and fees apply to all internship courses. Master's students are encouraged to verify an internship course counts towards program requirements prior to enrolling.  

Step 1 | CSUSB Liability Waiver

Students must review, sign and submit a CSUSB Liability Waiver. This provides information regarding assumption of risk. Email the completed Liability Waiver to the Internship Coordinator or submit via Adobe Sign.

Step 2 | Internship Learning Plan and Acknowledgement

The learning plan and acknowledgement identifies student and employer information, and provides specific goals and objectives that will be accomplished during the internship. 

Goals and objectives should be established with the internship supervisor - ensure to meet with the supervisor first before submitting the learning plan. Completion of the plan may require students to first login to MyCoyote. 

Step 3 | CSUSB Learning Site Agreement (Optional)

The CSUSB Learning Site Agreement (LSA) established responsibility between CSUSB and the company hosting the internship. Check below to determine if the LSA is required. 

  • Required 
    • Unpaid, for-profit internships
    • Unpaid, non-profit internships (e.g. City, County, Government) 
  • Not Required 
    • Paid, for-profit internships 
    • Paid, non-profit internships

This step will be completed by the Internship Coordinator and requires no action from the student. Depending on the company, a Learning Site Agreement may already be filed. If required, course enrollment will not be processed until the LSA has been received and approved by Risk Management.

Course Requirements | Earning Internship Credit

To earn ADMN 5753 credit (CR), the following must be completed:

  • Review course orientation materials
  • Submit a mid-reflection paper
  • Submit a final reflection paper 
  • Submit signed timesheets verifying a minimum 150 hours have been completed (average 10-15 hours per week)

Guidelines and due dates are established each semester and will be available for students via Canvas. Students who complete the requirements above will earn receive 3-units credit (CR) toward the concentration elective area - graded CR/NC. 

Failure to meet course requirements will result in a grade of NC (no credit). 

International students who are interested in internships and will require CPT may proceed only if the course (ADMN 5753) is a degree requirement. Students should verify through the PAWS report or seek assistance from an advisor or graduate program coordinator. Please refer to the international students and CPT website for general rules and procedures.
