The CSUSB Department of Music partnered with the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra to host its annual Summer Youth Music Camp June 16-20, welcoming middle and high school musicians from across the Inland Empire for an immersive week of musical instruction and performance.

Held on the Cal State San Bernardino campus, the camp featured classes, workshops, rehearsals, performance coaching, sectionals and masterclasses led by professional musicians and educators from both the university and the symphony. Throughout the week, students refined their musical skills while receiving mentorship from accomplished performers and instructors.

The program concluded with camp attendees performing alongside the symphony at the annual Concert Under the Stars on Saturday, June 20. Participants also earned eligibility for placement in the symphony or Overture Orchestra without an audition.

According to Matthew Poole, interim chair of the CSUSB Department of Music and Department of Theatre Arts, the summer camp gives students unique opportunities to learn from professional musicians while experiencing the collaborative spirit of the performing arts firsthand.

"We are so delighted to see the CSUSB Music Summer Camp grow, with another successful iteration this June,” Poole said. “The partnership between the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra and my colleagues here in the Department of Music is such an amazing opportunity for the children involved in the summer camp. Not only do the campers get the chance to be taught by our hugely talented and hard-working music faculty colleagues (and I should note: many of whom are also associated with the San Bernardino Symphony) but they also get the chance for mentorship and inspiration by meeting with and playing on the same stage as the symphony players.

“It continues to be a genuine pleasure to work with the San Bernardino Symphony in various ways in our shared mission to bring affordable live music of the highest quality to people of all ages in the communities that we serve," he said.

The annual camp reflects the shared commitment of CSUSB and the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra to expanding access to high-quality music education for young musicians throughout the Inland Empire. By combining expert instruction, hands-on learning and performance opportunities, the partnership continues to inspire the next generation of musicians while strengthening the region's vibrant arts community.
