A Fresno Bee editorial cited an article co-written by Abhilasha Srivastava, assistant professor of economics at CSUSB, about efforts in the U.S. to outlaw caste-based discrimination against immigrants from stigmatized groups in South Asia’s traditional social hierarchy. The editorial was about the Fresno City Council formally adopting an ordinance adding caste and indigenous status to the list of unacceptable discrimination.

In an article about a fatal shooting of a Cedar Glen merchant who displayed a pride flag at her store. Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino, said hate crimes against the LGBTQ community rose 52% last year in 42 major cities. Hate crimes against gender non-conforming people, including those in drag, increased 47% during the same period and anti-transgender hate crimes rose 28% during the same period.
The data is part of a report that will be presented Friday at the August meeting of the California Commission on the State of Hate.
