Cal State San Bernardino has launched a new open-access academic journal examining the growing role of artificial intelligence in higher education, as colleges and universities expand AI use while confronting questions about ethics, equity and academic integrity.
The International Journal of AI in Pedagogy, Innovation, and Learning Futures is free to both readers and authors and is designed as a peer-reviewed forum for research on how artificial intelligence is influencing teaching, learning and institutional decision-making.
The journal’s debut coincides with a systemwide artificial intelligence initiative announced in 2025 by the California State University system. The initiative aims to broaden access to AI tools, professional development and workforce preparation across the CSU’s 22 campuses, which includes CSUSB.
As AI adoption accelerates throughout the CSU system, the new journal aims to provide a scholarly outlet for research, policy analysis and instructional design related to responsible AI use in higher education. Its focus extends beyond whether AI should be used to how institutions can build trust in learning outcomes, academic evaluation and long-term degree credibility.
According to its stated scope, the journal will publish research on AI-enhanced teaching and assessment, ethical and equitable AI practices, learning sciences, instructional design, institutional policy and governance, and faculty development related to AI literacy. Submissions are welcomed from scholars worldwide.
The journal operates under an open-access publishing model that does not charge subscription or author fees, a structure intended to reduce barriers to participation and expand global access to research findings.
The launch also aligns with CSUSB’s Strategic Plan 2023–28, “Transforming Lives and Communities,” which emphasizes innovation, student success and community impact. University leaders have identified artificial intelligence as an area that intersects with those priorities, particularly as institutions address issues of quality, fairness, transparency and data privacy.
CSUSB has established campuswide structures to guide AI adoption, including an AI Steering Committee that provides institutional oversight for evaluating and integrating AI technologies. The journal will add a scholarly dimension to that work by creating a peer-reviewed venue for research on AI governance and educational practice.
The publication is supported by CSUSB Libraries and Dean Rebecca Lubas, whose work has focused on open access and scholarly communication. Library support is intended to strengthen publishing practices, discoverability and long-term access.
The journal is founded and edited by Viktor Wang, a professor in CSUSB’s Department of Educational Leadership and Technology, who has more than 16 years of experience editing academic journals. Jennifer Beamer, a Fulbright Scholar with a doctorate in communications and information science, serves as managing editor and brings experience in educational technology and open-access publishing.
Peer review will be conducted by an international network of scholars, reflecting the global reach of artificial intelligence in education.
As AI continues to reshape higher education, the journal aims to document and evaluate how institutions design learning experiences, assess student work and govern emerging technologies.
