Vicky Lopez (they/them), a first-generation CSUSB student with a background in firefighting, is using their engineering skills to develop innovative technologies that improve wildfire response. With support from CSUSB faculty, including Fadi Muheidat, associate professor of computer science, Lopez is helping to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence, technology and firefighting.
Lopez joined Muheidat’s research lab with a desire to do more, despite already managing a busy schedule with a full load of classes. Muheidat took notice of Lopez’s ambition, describing them as a hardworking student who maintained grit and tenacity. For Muheidat, supporting students’ ambitions goes beyond the classroom and into preparing them for real-world impact.
“I want to give my students the opportunity to develop more skills that prepare them to be career ready, to do internships and get hired full time,” said Muheidat.
Lopez’s drive to apply real-world firefighting knowledge to cutting-edge research quickly led them into projects focused on wildfire technology. Through their work, Lopez secured internships with UC Berkeley and Dryad. They also presented at the Cal-Bridge Program and earned first place in a CSUSB research competition.
Now preparing to apply for Ph.D. programs, Lopez represents the power of lived experience combined with academic excellence. “I am excited for what the future holds,” said Lopez. “When it comes to technology and developing and researching here at Cal State San Bernardino, the support system is here with the faculty, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
