SoCalGas bills to more than double as natural gas prices surge
Redlands Community News
Jan. 12, 2023

Daniel MacDonald, associate professor and chair of the Department of Economics at Cal State San Bernardino, said the spike in natural gas bills in January is a classic example of supply and demand.

“The price of natural gas is rising because demand is high,” MacDonald said. “We’ve had colder than usual temperatures, which have caused consumers to turn on, and up, their thermostats.”

While high demand usually prompts an increase in supply, global conflicts have put a dent in this cycle, he noted.

“Russia is a major natural gas producer,” MacDonald said. “We promised Europe we would sell them more natural gas, so that they were less dependent on Russian natural gas, but that depletes supplies for our domestic use. For the problem to be solved, we need either less demand or more supply.”
