After two years of weathering the theatrical landscape of Zoom plays and meetups, CSUSB’s resident theatre club is back from Feb. 3-5 to put on its signature show: “The Other Theatre Project.”

Traditionally produced as a series of one act plays, “The Other Theatre Project” showcases work completely designed, performed, and directed by students. This year puts a new twist on the tradition by having the work written by CSUSB students as well.

Seven scenes make up the one-act performance, each with different themes and styles interpreted by members of The Players of the Pear Garden (the resident theatre club and oldest club on campus).

“The Leopold Saga” is a series of three comedic vignettes written by Caitlin Lopez (’22), directed by herself and Cassidy Jessup (’22), that follows the trials and tribulations of a principal navigating the shark infested waters of middle school programming.

“A Matter of Life or Death,” by Jules Rivas and Deidra Cohen and directed by Matt Santos (’22), highlights underrepresented members of the Queer community as they find themselves stuck with a flat tire on a rainy road trip.

“Burnout” is a semi-autobiographical piece by Rose Rodriguez (’23) and Kimberly Argueta (’23), with direction by Caitlin Lopez, that explores the cultural differences of a first-generation college student and her mother.

“She is Hurricane,” by Alexis McGowan (’24), is a tempestuous poem set to music and movement by director Cassidy Jessup that looks at what it means to embrace your true nature, even through destruction.

“Aswang,” written and directed by Matt Santos, is a peek into the supernatural lore of Filipino culture as a young girl with immense power struggles to keep her true nature hidden during a routine shopping trip.

Performances are Feb. 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door for a $5 suggested donation, cash only.
