RAFFMA to open national juried exhibition, ‘To See Through’

Cal State San Bernardino’s Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA) will open “To See Through,” a national juried exhibition exploring transparency, translucency and what it means to look beyond the surface, on Sept. 12.

On view through Dec. 12, the exhibition brings together artists working across a range of media to examine clarity, translucency and opacity as conditions of discovery and comprehension — both visually and metaphorically.

“To See Through” is organized and curated by renowned glass artist Katherine Gray, professor and chair of CSUSB’s Department of Art and Design and resident evaluator on the Netflix glassblowing competition series, “Blown Away.”

“The desire to see through something is an impulse as fundamental as vision itself — the need to understand what lies beneath the surface, to have an unmediated view, to make sense of a world that rarely presents itself completely,” Gray said. “This exhibition explores the promise of optical lucidity and metaphorical transparency, the visible versus the invisible.”

Open to artists nationally and across disciplines, “To See Through” invited works that explore these ideas in any material or medium, including ceramics, glass, sculpture, painting, photography, mixed media, digital art and installation.

Visitors will also have a say in which participating artist returns to RAFFMA for a solo exhibition. Through the People’s Choice Award, the public can vote for their favorite artist, with the recipient earning the opportunity to present a solo exhibition in RAFFMA’s Mueller Gallery in 2028.

Gray brings an internationally recognized career in glass and contemporary art to the exhibition. Since earning her master of fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design, she has exhibited nationally and internationally and received numerous awards for her work. In addition to her role at CSUSB, she has gained a broader audience through Netflix’s “Blown Away,” where she serves as the show’s resident evaluator.
