CSUSB’s Parenting Intervention Project helps inmates reconnect with their children and themselvesCalifornia ForwardOct. 20, 2017

Christopher Vallejo was grocery shopping when he ran into one of his former students, a student he taught at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto. “He had his two young sons with him, maybe five and six, and he comes up and he’s telling me how great he’s doing,” recalled Vallejo, who teaches parenting classes in San Bernardino County’s jails. “He looked healthy. He looked sober and he was working. They were happy and kind of joking around with him.”

This outcome is what San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department strives for when inmates take classes offered through the Inmate Services Unit. The unit offers 24 classes and programs including vital classes for inmates who are parents through The Parenting Intervention Project. This project includes in-jail parenting and in-jail trauma recovery classes as well as parent-child interaction time. The classes and programs are designed to help inmates realize how their childhood traumas affected their lives, what they can do to be better parents and pave the way for successful reentry.

Dr. Laura Kamptner of California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), along with Dr. Faith McClure, created the research-based parent education program in 2009.

Orientation session for Project Rebound set for Oct. 24 at CSUSBHigh Desert DailyOct. 2, 2017

Project Rebound, the campus-based re-entry program for the formerly incarcerated that assists them as students at Cal State San Bernardino, will host an orientation for those interested in participating in the program.

Presented by the Osher Adult Re-Entry Center, the orientation will take place from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, in the Santos Manuel Student Union Fourplex (SU 217-218).

Project Rebound at Cal State San Bernardino is modeled after San Francisco State’s Project Rebound that helps formerly incarcerated students prepare for, apply to, enroll in, and graduate with high-quality degrees from CSUSB.

The program was established at CSUSB in 2016 by professors Carolyn Eggleston (special education), the project’s senior adviser, and Annika Anderson (sociology), the project’s director and principle investigator.

“We invite all formerly incarcerated individuals to attend the orientation, learn about the resources that we provide and make suggestions for how we can build a community that supports our formerly incarcerated students,” Anderson said. “We know that their challenges extend beyond educational attainment (e.g. housing and employment), so we also want to help them navigate these issues, as we partner with community organizations.”

CSUSB professor brings her documentary film on Israeli-Palestinian conflict to Memphis, Tenn.Memphis FlyerOct. 20, 2017

The documentary '1948: Creation and Catastrophe' screened at Rhodes College Oct.20. The film is co-directed by Andy Trimlett, an Emmy-winning producer who has worked for PBS, and Dr. Ahlam Muhtaseb, professor of communication studies at California State University. Timlett and Muhtaseb conducted more than 90 interviews and poured over archives around the world for ten years to tell the story of the post-Holocaust creation of the modern state of Israel and the Palestinians displaced in the process. These events set in motion much of today's conflict in the Middle East, and the seemingly intractable Palestinian refugee crises in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The screening is something of a homecoming for Muhaseb, who earned her Ph.D. at the University of Memphis, where she came as a Fullbright Scholar from her native Hebron. The film is presented by Amnesty International and the Rhodes College Muslim Student Association.
