After city council debate, documentary film by CSUSB professor to be shown as part of West Hollywood’s Human Rights Speakers SeriesWEHOville (West Hollywood)April 2, 2019 The community newspaper reported that the West Hollywood City Council voted 3-2 to defeat a measure that would have prevented the screening of the documentary “1948: Creation and Catastrophe,” co-produced by Ahlam Muhtaseb, CSUSB communication studies professor Ahlam Muhtaseb, as part of the city’s Human Rights Speakers Series. The film was originally scheduled to be shown on Dec. 12, but opposition to it led the council to postpone the event. It will now be screened on April 16. Muhtaseb, who has done fieldwork in Palestinian refugee camps in the Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine, and the film’s other producer, Andy Trimlett, were to have participated in a panel discussion after the Dec. 12 screening. Muhtaseb told the council she has worked on the documentary for over 10 years, interviewing a wide variety of people involved in the creation of Israel and its settlements in Palestine, including Israeli soldiers. Muhtaseb said she was opposed to anti-Semitism and described the effort to ban screening of the film as anti-Semitism. Read the complete article at “Israel-Palestine conflict becomes the focus of a West Hollywood City Council debate.”
